The Weeknd abruptly stopped his sold-out SoFi Stadium concert in Inglewood on Saturday night just three songs into the set, telling fans he had to cancel the show after losing his voice in the middle of “Can’t Feel My Face.”

In the middle of the song, the Weeknd walked off stage. The song ended and another started before the lights came up. The singer walked back out onstage, said he had lost his voice and apologized for having to cancel.
“I’m going to make sure everyone is good, you’ll get your money back,” he told the stunned audience. “But I’ll do a show real soon for you guys.” Many fans remained confused or in disbelief, not leaving their seats even after it was clear the show was over.

The Weeknd later released a statement that read: “My voice went out during the first song and I’m devastated. Felt it go and my heart dropped. My deepest apologies to my fans here. I promise I’ll make it up to you with a new date.”

In praising opening night at SoFi on Friday, Times music critic Mikael Wood called the Weeknd’s mix of old and new material “crisp and pulverizingly loud.” Wrote Wood: “His singing carried emotion with a laser-like intensity, particularly in the wistful ‘Out of Time’ and ‘I Feel It Coming,’ even amid the boomy atmosphere of a stadium.”

How significant the Weeknd’s vocal problem might be and whether any other tour dates would be affected remained unclear Saturday night. The next dates listed on Ticketmaster’s calendar were Sept. 13 in Johanneshov, Sweden, followed by Sept. 22 and 23 in Toronto.

Booing an artist for losing their voice is the equivalent of going to see your favourite sports player and booing them if they got injured….absolute lowest of low!
  • People need to understand that this dude is singing almost every single night.. 90% of pop stars are singing along to a back track and wouldn't have to worry about this problem. So he has my utmost amount of respect
  • I can't imagine the anxiety he probably had when he felt it coming. My heart goes out to him. He made the right decision.

I'm not a big fan of the weekend, nor do I listen to his music much; but this earned an absurd amount of respect from me. Not only to give a genuine performance every night and not use a backing track; but also to come out and personally apologize to face a boo'ing selfish audience has got to be one of the most devastating experiences.
  • I can't believe people actually booed him. They suck. This guy is one of the most amazing singers out there and does live shows.
  • You can tell the dude felt bad, if you watch the full video you can tell he's seriously on the verge of tears when people start booing. Very hard to watch but I commend him
  • I've seen other professionals handle the same situation far worse. The man conducted himself with integrity. Mad respect. That is an honest man.

The fact that he said “I love you” to his fans even though they booed him, it just proves how he has a golden heart. 💛
  • I HAVE SO MUCH RESPECT ON HIM CAUSE HE ACTUALLY SANG IN ALL THE CONCERTS UNTIL HIS VOICE WENT OUT, UNLIKE ALL OTHER FAKE STAGE PERFORMERS WHO LIPSYNC..
  • To me what’s most mesmerizing is the humanity and the authenticity of this moment, you can tell this is artist who genuinely cares about the experience, who genuinely cares about what the listener hears, what the audience sees, what the soul feels
  • @Pveilchen
He is the biggest name in the music industry right now and still so vulnerable in front of the audience and so humble. It is great that he tkes responsibility and shows respect to the audience by getting on stage again to explain the situation and to apologise him self instead of sending a staff member. Of cource some people will boo, jerks are everywhere.
  • Hearing him trying to continue the show with him losing his voice. True Legend
  • Im sorry but that was so professional of him. That makes me sad for him. He been through so much. This tour was 3 years and he been so many roadblocks. He is tired but he is doing the best... he wanted to perform he is crying and he is hurt. Rest up Abel.
  • He's not superman, he's human our bodies need healing when we take it to the extreme. What's even cooler he says he wants to give the audience what they want to hear but he can't do it, so instead of lip-syncing, he gave his fans their money back! True Artist!
  • @MochaMinRR
The fact that people are booing him even when he said they would get their money back and he apologised is just disgusting, they literally got half a show for free
  • This guy not only cares about his music, but the personal feelings and money and time that everyone else has. I love this guy
  • He came out to personally say sorry to not leave you hanging. You can tell it's ripping him apart to stop the show. Don't boo him, Understand him. I Can't believe I heard someone boo him. No respect. Respect to The Weekend. Much Love & Support From Canada!
  • It doesn’t matter how many hit records you have, how healthy or disciplined you are, this can happen to anyone. As a singer myself, I understand the heartbreak of just not being able to deliver a performance to the best of your ability. It stays with you long after you walk off stage. While I may not listen to this man’s music on my day to day, I respect the hell out of how he handled this situation. Standing on stage in front of a full arena, and holding your ground is a hard thing to do, while some fans may have left upset, his health comes first, and he should never have to apologize for that. You have a fan right here sir!!❤️🙏

Mad respect man. He literally sung until his voice went out + without any lip syncing.
