RARE EMD SW1001-1 (EMD SW1200 Rebuild) Leads 3,500ft Intermodal SOLO! Rail Link in Savannah, GA!

Published 2019-06-30
While I was in Savannah, GA, I decided to do some railfanning at the Amtrak station. Shortly after I arrived, a decent sized intermodal appeared being pulled by this little engine. It only has 1000 horsepower! I was expecting another engine, but nope, it was only this little guy. Listen to sound of pure EMD power working hard!

This locomotive is owned by Rail Link Inc. (NOT Montana Rail Link) of the Genessee and Wyoming. Originally built as an EMD SW1200 (1200HP), it was later modified to an SW1200R and then rebuilt as an SW1001-1 (1000HP).

I later judged the length of the train based on the distance between the station and an overpass that can be seen in the distance. That distance is about 3,000 feet, and even when the locomotive was pretty much underneath the bridge there was still quite a few hundred feet of train left to pass me! I didn't film the whole train, as it was going very slowly and it stopped at some point to get clearance to cross a junction just beyond the overpass.

Distance from the overpass to the center of the station platform is around 3000ft. They will pull (in that direction) up to around 5000-6000 ft, but usually with 2 locos.
