Hi friends, happy Thursday!

Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Today we’re talking about a place that NYC has tried to erase from its maps: Hart Island. Since the day it was discovered, it has been used as a prison, a war training camp, and even an insane asylum. Today, millions of dead bodies are kept on the island- right next to New Yorkers who don’t even know it exists. So sit back, relax, and find out what other secrets this place is hiding.

I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

A Dark History on SeaWorld would be amazing if you ever get the time! 😁❤️
  • Can you please do a dark history on the history of childbirth? It’s fascinating and you always have the best facts!
  • @Iywbdkr
A Rikers Island episode would be so cool! Probably multi part since its got such a storied history
  • If she had her own Netflix series I would binge watch everything of hers in a day and beg for more episodes lol 😂

I first heard of Hart Island when I went down a Disney rabbit hole. Bobby Driscoll, Peter Pan's model and voice actor, is buried there. Child stars often live tragic lives, but his is among the saddest to me. I'm surprised there isn't a book or movie about his life.
  • Ask a mortician also talked about Hart Island in her video on "Handling the Coronavirus Dead in New York." If anyone else is interested in learning more about the subject of what to do with the deceased during a pandemic. I know that mass trench burials bring up unpleasant images for people. But, it was interesting to learn why they are necessary at times, without sensationalizing the practice.
  • "..what does an island with a bunch of dead bodies need? A tilt-a-whirl! 😁" 😂😂 I love Bailey so much
  • @LisaTheMad
My heart breaks for the forgotten people on Hart Island 😢
  • Would you ever do an episode on underground cities around the US? There’s one under Indianapolis and one under Seattle, but there’s a lot more of them. I think you’d find it interesting.

Thank you for educating us, always. History has always been so boring to me but you’ve sparked a genuine sense of curiosity in us all. We love you, Queen.

Fun fact. My hubby & I own a tattoo shop and our daughter started learning at age 5. She has since decided to not continue but it was the sweetest thing to share with her. When she was in 4th grade she did a report on the history of tattooing & tattoo machines. My hubby has been tattooing for over 30 years & he’s never tattooed me. He also manufactures machines. This episode was awesome.

I'm a new Yorker. The refrigerator trucks are practically synonymous with c19 to many of us. So is Heart Island. Thank you for covering this piece of NY dark history.
  • Like how hard would it have been for New York to mark these graves?! My heart goes out to the family members.
  • The story of the lady whose daughter died broke my heart. I lost my daughter 6 years ago late in my pregnancy. The trauma of that alone who beyond words, let alone then not being able to lay them to rest!! Completely disgraceful, I hope things are a little easier now she knows where she is.
  • Bailey actually puts real effort into the sponsorships every time there is one. appreciation

It's so crazy to me learning about things like this, as someone who suffers with borderline personality disorder and has major 'episodes' and it's crazy to think that things like this could have been my reality and was for so many .

You should deep dive the mass grave in Canada, Bailey. The remains of more than 1,000 people, mostly children, have been discovered on the grounds of three former residential schools in two Canadian provinces since May. In late June, the remains of 751 people, mainly Indigenous children, were discovered at the site of a former school in the province of Saskatchewan, a Canadian Indigenous group said.

Would love an episode about towns disappearing like Doveland, Wisconsin!! 💜
  • @sostoked07
Watching this felt very surreal. We are actually living through this dark chapter of history, and it isn't over. Prayers for all the buried beloved in Hart Island, and I hope their families are given the closure they deserve.
  • @xcelestialx
day 3 of suggesting an episode about the OCEAN! i’d love to hear any stories you can dig up about crazy things that have been discovered under the sea or maybe bermuda triangle stuff 🫣🌊
