180k miles is some good mileage, all cars need tuned or some form of maintenance after about 200-250k. My Honda Civic (2001) went 230,000 miles before I had any problems, and all I had to do is just change some spark plugs and get the engine readjusted. If the RX-8 was a GM, it would have died at 90,000 miles. Be greatful

177k miles.. GOOD JOB MAN! Mines at 98k and just died.

I'm thinking about getting one as well but the guy above you is right, they're affordable but it makes since to save a little more and get a used 350z which is far more faster and reliable than the Rx8

umm, I have engines with over 200,000km on them, never pre mixed oil, Still good compression and still running strong. I've never blown a rotary, and as for being gentile on them, NO!, the "proper" way, or at least the way I've been doing it is to just beat the crap out of them every single chance you get. It cleans out the carbon buildup that could destroy the seals. I've had rx7's where the body's turn to shit before the engine dies.

I'm a mechanic and I had the same problem, the best and only way to get these engines to start again once they do this is to bump them off ( manual transmission ). I don't mean get a few mates to push you wile you dump the clutch in 1st I mean get towed by a 4 x 4 or something similar. Then kick its arse down the road for a few miles. Hope this helps anyone who is stuck.

If this does not work after several attempts then either call Mazda Assist or fully depress the accelerator and crank the engine for 10s (This actually shuts off the fuel to the engine and helps clear fuel from chamber), then try to start as above again. Alternatively removing the fuse to the fuel injection system and cranking the engine should have the same effect.

Have some one check your catalytic converter. Mine was stopped almost completely up! My RX-8 could barely climb a 1 degree grade hill! All power was gone. No take off power. sometimes it would drive alright for a couple of miles and then I would lose all horsepower. Just had the converter cut off and not replaced. Car got all its hosspower back but is a little louder now. Check it out. Cheap fix! And if you havent already, get a battery with really high cranking amps!

Its true to some extent, my 8 had trouble starting and I got a new starter motor that was way more powerful than the stock one, I can now start my car and shut it off right away and it never floods. Oh and I also upgraded the spark plugs and wires. Biggest difference was the starter though...
  • @ActiveSkater13
or it could be the engine flooding, old rotarys did that, heard new ones dont but maybe something went wrong, and it would normally happen on warm start
  • @masterturc
Thanks for the reply. Ive changed coils, plugs and leads also a new battery it was okay then after couple weeks it would start when its warm. Mazda said its losing compression so I sold it!!

If this doesn’t work then the plugs may need to be removed to clean them. Following an episode of flooding the functioning of the cat should be checked by the dealer as it has been known for the unburnt fuel to damage the cat. In practice problems only seem to happen following a short move from cold e.g. moving car from garage to driveway. If you need to do this then run the engine for a few minutes or go for a run round the block before switching the engine off.

We have no idea if he's owned it since new, so no, we don't know that. Someone looked after it *very* well, but it's quite possible (likely even) that this young man bought it used, and DIDN'T know what to do with it, thus... the video we have here.
  • @MrEGThug
Well its time for a new engine
  • @littlesammy2004
Was that an unlimited power train warranty? Does that warranty cover the replacement engine as well?
  • @harlemkiid149
Is it true that Rx8's from 04-08 come with a 100k mile engine replacement warranty?
  • @CodeRed071
I've seen about 5 of these cars come in with the apex seals blown. pull the plugs out, hook a compression tester up but remove the check valve out of the tester and crank the engine... there should be one big spike and two smaller spikes. if not... sorry.
  • @opens11
By warming it up do you mean reving the engine or just starting the car and letting it run for 5-10 mins before driving?
