The "Roguevania" - Dead Cells vs A Robot Named Fight! - (Roguelite Metroidvanias)

Published 2017-09-04
A new blend of genres has been popping up recently called "Roguevania" or Roguelite Metroidvania (I've even heard "Metrogue" on occasion). It's essentially a mashup of mashups, but are these games really both a roguelite AND metroidvania at the same time? Is that even possible? I intend to find out, so let's dive deep into the two recent games to don the Roguevania mantle: Dead Cells and A Robot Named Fight!

Dead Cells is a PR semantics problem. "Roguevania" sounds sexier than "Permadeath Multi-Route Platformer".

I posted your video on the Dead Cells Steam forum to get some feedback and the dev said this: "Most of the critics here are totally valids. Dead Cells is indeed more of a Roguelite than a Metroidvania as of now, but we're working on the expanding the elements we borrow from that genre (upgrade system, Metroidvania "keys", etc.). Thanks for posting the video! " http://steamcommunity.com/app/588650/discussions/0/1474222595295028114/?tscn=1504883027 Guess this can end up being one of the best Roguelite Metroidvania games! :)

The thing with combining two genres, it's not suppose to keep either identity, it's suppose to have some of both.

"where you can tickle a puddle of slime and force it to grow erect..." That sentence sounds so wrong...

When I hear the term "Roguevania", what I think of is a combination of a Roguelike/Roguelite and Castlevania, which I think Dead Cells does deliver. A Robot Named Fight on the other hand looks more like a "Metrogue". I cannot see any Castlevania influence there so why let it inherit the "Vania" part of Metroidvania? We took such a deep dive into terminology, based on the history of two different franchises which share a lot of similarities but focus on other aspects, mostly combat vs. exploration. I think it's not a good idea to split a combination of two words and use either part as a symbol for the combination...

Everybody should go buy A Robot Named Fight. It's fucking great.

A Robot Named Fight is a love letter to Super Metroid. I love it.

I've noticed a lot of people make the similar complaint about the timed doors in Dead Cells, that they discourage exploration. There are even a bunch of mods that remove or increase time limits on those doors. However, from my own time playing the game (I only picked it up on full release), it felt more like a way to enable different playstyles. As a beginner, it's more likely that you'll explore levels thoroughly to get all the resources they have. Once you get more comfortable with the movement and fighting, you can go faster and consistently make the timed doors - even if you end up missing out on scrolls found in the levels, each timed door room has one to compensate for it. Depending on the layout RNG, you might even end up picking up scrolls both in the level and in the timed door rooms, though that would still require a good deal of skill. The point is, whether you choose to take your time exploring or rush the doors, you should end up with roughly the same overall number of scrolls, allowing you to push further in the run.

ARNF is absolutely a great game, but saying you have no sense of familiarity is only partly true: every run is seeded, and you can enter custom seeds to repeat runs that you liked.

Actually the genre Metroidvania wasn't names after Metroid and Castlevania, but the Metroid like Castlevania were called like that by people because they though these Castlevania Games were too much like Metroid.... Eventually that turned into the name of the genre though, but not because these Games are inspired by Castlevania

While I'm sure this took a lot of time and effort to make, I can say that I think this is one of the best videos you've ever made, and I would love to see more of these analysis videos. Great job mr. Clown!

I can't get enough of these kinds of analysis videos. Keep 'em coming!
  • You know I'm glad to hear someone say it. I've been playing Dead Cells for a while now and I noticed pretty early that it didn't really seem like a metroidvania, however that thought was fleeting as I was so captivated by the combat that I just kept playing anyway. I definitely need to try "A Robot Named Fight" though.
  • @JSmashChannel0
I really like these kind of videos, I hope you'll continue to do them in this way :D
  • @TheBooBomber609
While I understand that you were reviewing the Early Access version of Dead Cells, you forgot that Dead Cells was also inspired by Dark Souls, which is a combat-focused game that centers around learning from death. That would obviously mean that Dead Cells wouldn’t be fully Metroidvania-styled. Perhaps you should look at these games again now that they are both fully finished.

I keep on finding these kinds of videos, and I love them. Sadly I don't have nearly enough time to bingewatch (like I usually do). Subbed thumbs uppp
  • @Doodledobble
You did a great job making this video informative and interesting. I vote for more!
