Wild Tasmania Part 3 - Sarah Island #tasmania#sarahisland#convict#penalsettlement#australianhistory

Sorry, a short break from fishing videos - a 4 part series on Tasmanian history and environment. Back soon with more fishing!

Departing from the Tasmanian West Coast town of Strahan, we enjoyed a boat trip to Hells Gate and on to Sarah Island, site of the first penal colony in Tasmania. Our excellent guide walked us through the ruins and explained what life was like in this brutal convict settlement.
Escape from Sarah Island was virtually impossible, although many tried (and many died attempting it). The story of the last boat ever built there, that was siezed by a group of convicts and sailed to Chile in South America, was particularly fascinating.
Well worth the effort to go and see for yourself!
