This is how houses in India used to be earlier. Reminds me of my Grandparents' house.

As an architect I wonder how much joy courtyard homes brings to ones who live in the house. Cool Breeze , healing sound of water , ligh and shadows , open to sky star and moon lights , interactive space and many many more makes it poetics.

I remember my grandfathers house in Karnataka.... same with 10 pillars around...... this design is because we place tulsi in centre to get sun light and water during rainy day....

This was how my paternal grandparents house was constructed with a courtyard which served as a central space. It served as the space for small functions we had at home. My dream is to either own or construct something similar. My inlaws place doesn’t have the inside court yard, but it’s right after the kitchen and we have the holy basil planter in the center. They also have the olden style of home construction where there is a back gate into the house with the toilet and bathroom situated outside the main living area, you wash your feet and pass through the courtyard to get inside the house. The front entrance is quite normal, entry way, living space etc. It’s really lovely.
  • Reminds me of my grandparents house in my village... One of my goal is to build such a house and live in it ☺️

In uttar pradesh too, in older times houses used to like this only.... Courtyard in the centre surrounded by open verandahs then rooms...

Not only the Southern part of India, but i guess, across cultures, this architecture is prevelant. My paternal home ia also the same, nestled in the heart of Bihar, a quaint village named Narayanpur... However, this structure can be seen in houses across the south east asia region....🙏

My great uncle had a villa like this with a tower on the entrance. There was a half floor for cold storage in the tower; between the kitchen & the viewing top library. It had a secret door on the floor under a rug. Inside there were ventilation spaces that we could see & hear down at the kitchen. My neighbor had a modern version with no tower or mediterranean tiles but with a squared look of an indoor garden instead of reflection pond.
