Hotdog recipe, coney island chili dog recipe

Here is a very close replica to the famous "Coney Island" chili dog from Michigan. I really enjoyed this dog, and hope you give it a try. I also hoped you have enjoyed my hot dog series, and I will be posting more hot dogs to this playlist in time, but this will be the last one for now. I have other projects I need to get started on. Enjoy :)

I have had a few people ask me about the onion chopper I'm using in this video. You can order it from Amazon.com by following this link: amzn.to/12SxTc7

Ingredients
FOR CHILI
Onions 1 , finely chopped
96% lean ground beef 1 Pound
Garlic 2 Clove (10 gm), chopped
Oil 1 Tablespoon
Chili powder 2 Tablespoon
Cumin powder 1 Tablespoon
Water 1 Cup (16 tbs)
Canned tomato paste 6 Ounce (1 Can)
Salt 1⁄2 Teaspoon
Prepared yellow mustard 1 Tablespoon
Worcestershire sauce 1 Tablespoon
Brown sugar 2 Teaspoon

FOR OTHER INGREDIENTS
Frankfurter sausages 6
Hot dog buns 6
Mustard sauce 6 Tablespoon
Chopped onion 3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)

Directions
MAKING
For Chili
1. Heat oil in a pan and stir in ground beef. Add half of the chopped onions, chopped garlic and let it cook.
2. When the meat changes color and starts to release water, add chili powder and cumin powder. Mix and cook for 3 more minutes.
3. Pour in water and tomato paste, blend it well. Season with salt.
4.Thereafter mix in prepared yellow mustard, worcestershire sauce and brown sugar. Let it simmer for 5 minutes or until of desired thickness. Keep the chili aside.
For buns and frankfurters
5. Steam the frankfurters for 4 minutes. In the same steamer, place the hot dog buns and steam for a couple of minutes.

SERVING
6. Place a frankfurter in the middle of the bun, cover the sausage with chill. Drizzle some mustard sauce over the top and garnish with chopped onions. Repeat with the rest of the buns and enjoy.

  • I just made this recipe for my parents and sister while visiting. It was a big hit! Dad is 98 years old, and not always excited about trying new things. However, he unexpectedly had two dogs as well as a side of the chili after we ran out of dogs! So, I heartily recommend this recipe!
  • Looks really good!  Coneys are traditionally cooked on a flattop griddle, not steamed, for what it's worth.  I'm no cook, but I'm told that cooking them on a flattop better helps the hot dog retain its "snap" when you bite into it.  The buns are steamed. Lifelong Michigander here, and I loooooooove coneys.  Glad to see them get some out-of-state love =)

I'm getting shivers down my spine watching this. I WANT THAT CHILI DOG.

Nice job! A little tip for the tomato paste. I find if you open both sides of the can and push the paste out with one of the lids you won’t even have to scoop it out. Love your videos!
  • being away from home (Detroit) this is super close and very tasty, Detroit style calls for a thinner sauce and sweet onion but man you are damn close!
  • Oh yeah, I replaced water with Beef Stock the second time, gave it even more amazing flavor. Either way its good.
  • Being from the metro Detroit area, I can attest this recipe is as close as it gets to the top Coney Island chili. Absolutely delicious, put this on some french fries with some cheddar cheese and it!s heaven!! I'm very picky on the chili sauce, but this recipe here absolutely nails it to perfection on how a coney chili should taste.
  • Hey brother I bought one of those onion chopper’s at Walmart and I have never look back that is one of the best gadgets in the kitchen we love it we eat alot onions 🧅 in different recipes and things👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Best chili sauce I’ve ever ate also 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
  • Made just a few alterations to this after cooking it a few times. For anyone interested, I added a TBS of paprika, along with a 1/2 TSP of Hungarian paprika. I also added probably around a TSP, maybe a little more of granulated garlic (just do it to taste). Also, I noticed the onion wasn't specified, I used an entire sweet onion, I'm guessing this used a yellow onion from the amount added. The only other thing I did different was to let the chili simmer for about 1 1/2 hours so it thickened even more, but that's completely optional, just go until it's what you like.
  • Made these! Absolutely amazing, only thing I changed was I used beef broth in place of water, and added cayenne pepper. I usually make a similar chili (minus the brown sugar, mustard, and Worcestershire) but add kidney beans, and really get a good sear on the ground beef (think giant smash burger, then broken up) then slice open the franks and sear on cast iron, then assemble and broil in oven topped with chili and cheese. But these steamed buns in your vid are magic! Thanks for sharing!
  • My late mother use to make a Virginia style Coney dog that had people ask her how she made them as they really liked them. But she never told anyone her recipe and she took it to the grave with her. Watching this brought back memories of her Coney's, and how much I miss her. I will have to give this a try.
  • Thanks for the Detroit love. Good video. The secret ingredient for Detroit coney sauce is beefheart and the hotdogs should be natural casing grilled on a flat top. The taste of those sear marks and the snap of the natural casing add to the experience.
  • Here in Portugal hot dogs are not that big of a dealI but since I started watching your recipes,it all changed for me. Great Work.
  • I made this and canned it in the winter using 10 pounds of meat. AWESOME!!!!! It made twelve pints. Down to the last couple so I need to do it again soon> . Would like to have a couple of dozen on the shelf for summer cook outs. Thanks for teaching!!!
  • Thanks for this great recipe! I'm in Mexico and I am a good fan of your videos so glad there people like you sharing this great recipes... I am going to try this right now!
  • As someone who lives far away from America, I always wanted to know what exactly Chilly dogs are - and today I found out. Thanks for the recipe. Also, great channel, subscribed !
  • I miss Coney Island. My favorite one was past Woodward (east) on 12 mile (I think). National Coney Island has the best coney dogs.
  • I just made this and added a bit of garlic powder, red pepper, and black pepper to it and increased all the ingredients just a tad to make a bit more and oh my goodness was this ever delicious!! This one is a keeper for sure! Thank you for sharing :)
  • As a michigander who's eaten these things for my 39 years, I'm honored. A coney dog is deceptively simple and super yummy.
