  • I don't understand why you don't have 500k subs Barry your content is top shelf. I remember when YouTube started recommending videos to me from a guy named Rick Beato he was mainly doing music theory and had about 10k subs and he's doing really well now so maybe that's a good sign of things to come for you. :- )

Most people who have learned from the beginning on a DAW are accustomed to the idea of only changing one level -- fading one fader -- at a time. With a surface, as with an actual console, you can ride more than one thing at a time. That's the way I HAVE to mix, and why I have to have a control surface. That one thing makes the rest of the discussion moot.
  • I have to say thank you sir. I think you helped me avoid making an expensive mistake! You made some valid points! Again, thank you.
  • I love my Faderport single fader controller. Its not as sexy as controllers with oodles of faders but it is inexpensive and it fits great on the left of my keyboard. I love closing my eyes and using the single fader to set levels, thats one of the few things I can say where it really beats using a mouse. The transport controls on it are really handy also.

I LOVE how you're not afraid to speak your truth nor be swayed by commercial agendas.
  • I just ordered a control surface. Tried it for a few hours and put it right back in the box and do not regret returning it! Especially after watching this!

Hey Barry ! I just discovered your channel and MANNNN YOU ARE AWESOME ! Thanks for sharing your experience and thank you especially for your passion !!! Greatings from Montréal Canada ! ;)

Years ago I was in the process of building a 24ch 8 buss control surface. That faded away as my workflow changed. Presently, I have an Avid Artist Control that I would only implement for the purpose of buss control. It has the famed screen issue as to why it’s not already in use, but in any case your points are directly with my current line of though. Great info.

I love my Faderport 8 for essential functions:
the faders.... selecting, muting, soloing and arming tracks, the scroll wheel and transport functions (rec/play/pause/reset)...the rest I do with my LogicKeyboard and mouse

Man, I love when someone tells you the truth even if that’s not what you want to hear. Thanks for being honest! I’m definitely using my money in something else or just buy a small single-fader control surface considering there are some other things that could add more value to my mixing.

Great Video ! You look like my high school band instructor. Cool guy. Anyways Happy Holidays & thanks for the content.
  • You pretty much nailed it - it’s the idea of it more than the actually having to use it part. I very much like the idea of getting a control surface and pushing real faders around, and theoretically doing 90% or more of the things I currently do in Logic with it instead of a keyboard and mouse. But I’ve only ever truly learned and practiced music production in a DAW, using a keyboard and mouse. When I ask myself should I get a controller, and if I’d actually want to take the time to literally re-learn my whole workflow, and accept that it’s actually going to slow me down until I’m really well familiarized with it… well, I just don’t know the answer, and that kind of tells me that I probably shouldn’t get one 🤷🏻‍♂️
  • Love the Bling! I currently have 3 Avid S1's and a Protools Dock on one desk each paired with 12.9 inch iPad Pros. I choose not to use Pro Tools. I sketch and do most work in Logic but mix real jobs in Nuendo. The ability to switch between our Logic Workstation and our Nuendo Workstation, on the fly, is remarkable! Eucon over ethernet makes this possible and is fantastic, (when it works.) Eucon is highly temperamental.

You mentioned "The Great Mixers Of Today" not using control surfaces. I don't know of any (A-List Film Mixers) working without a surface. Alan Meyerson 130 films for Hans Zimmer alone. Dennis Sands every Marvel film as well as 300 other titles. They both use the Avid S6 with a trackball. Junkie XL may be the exception.

Finally, you also mentioned The SSL UF8 Control Surface.... I'm sure you're aware that the UF8 pairs perfectly with that SSL UC1 you are currently demoing. Are you also demoing the plugin?

I loved using the D-Command back in the day. As someone who works with both Media Composer and Pro Tools I found many facilities that employ post editors care most about speed and efficiency using keyboard shortcuts. Control surfaces impress clients and there are valid reasons for a facility to have an S4 or S6, but for the self employed engineer focus on speed and quality so you're not economically upside down.
