Speaking to Talk’s Cristo, political commentator Russell Quirk slams US secret service director Kimberly Cheatle after the service failed to detect the shooter before he opened fire on Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.

Donald Trump described on Thursday how he narrowly survived an attempt on his life, telling a rapt audience at the Republican National Convention in his first speech since the attack that he was only there "by the grace of Almighty God."

"I heard a loud whizzing sound and felt something hit me really, really hard on my right ear," he said during a 14-minute account, a thick bandage still covering his ear. "I said to myself, 'Wow, what was that? It can only be a bullet."

When he told the Milwaukee crowd that he was "not supposed to be here," the delegates chanted back, "Yes you are!"

Some years ago in Fryent Country Park near Wembley a man was reported in a pond. When the police turned up in force they just stood around the pond doing nothing. When asked why they hadn't gone in to pull him out the reply was "We are waiting for the police frogman". When he eventually turned up & went into the pond it was found that the depth of the water didn't reach his knees but the man by then was dead.

The point at the end about health and safety and police not being allowed to jump in and save people, I'd like to advise that: When I was trained as a PC in 1980. All of us were given weekly trips to the pool. The best swimmers were also trained specifically for events like this. I was in the group and that's how I got my swimming qualification. If what you said is true, (Perhaps a more recently trained PC could comment?) then it's crazy. We are told it's a dangerous job and one day you may have to risk your life.
