Lorna Anderson represented California in the Miss America Pageant of 1957 and was selected third runner-up. Her talent was the accordion!
Bert Parks introduced Lorna by saying, "Ask any child what instrument he would like to play most, chances are he would say 'an accordion.' And that is Miss California's instrument, and she's going to play for you right now."
Lorna took the stage and charmed the judges, playing "Dark Eyes."

Beautiful and musically talented the real deal
  • She was excellent ! Those were the days when kids wanted to play the accordion ! She also had a great smile ( something that evades me to this day !)
  • Some music stays a lifetime...such is Dark Eyes with me...Thank you for the nice comments...
  • Great to hear from the days when accordion music was popular. In 1957 I would say that the number one musical instrument for lessons chosen by parents was the accordion. Rock 'n' Roll was just getting popular and by 1957 I'd say that most kids would choose the guitar to take music lessons. Lorna Anderson is playing her variation of the Charles Magnante arrangement of "Dark Eyes"

i recall this live performance in 1957. I was 16 and fell in love.
  • Красивая женщина! И как талантливо играет!

What a performance from start to finish! Not only is Lorna a talented accordion player, but she plays with such confidence and grace that the music is elevated to another level of awareness. She should of won.

It must be amazing to have a video like this to look back on. To observe the skill and joy that you have and to see the audience captivated. I'm very happy to be one the people who continue the craft, being now 16 years old and playing a diatonic button accordion. Mine is large enough to be considered fully chromatic, which is a nice touch. I've been playing for 3 months now and I'm already amusing the local dancing scene:)
  • Third RunnerUp? What were those judges thinking? She is hands down Miss America.
  • От неё невозможно отвести взгляд, какая великолепная красавица!!!
  • The accordion was so available locally in the 50s and everyone seemed to watch Lawrence Welk...There were two accordion studios in Sacramento..a town of 250,000....It's so sad to find that there are so few accordions in so very many parts of the US...Let's bring it back!!!!...smile
