Kirk wins again, everyone. We're back with more Tool, and he's been keeping this song from me for quite a while. I have heard "The Pot" in concert in 2019, but I was very unfamiliar with their music and it never registered, so this will feel like a first time listen. Now, we decided on the studio release over a live version so I could catch all the nuances without any visual distractions. Let's get analyzing!

Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Tool performing "The Pot”.

  • As the story goes, “Danny Carey made a deal with the devil. We’re not sure what Danny got from the deal, but the devil got drum lessons.”
  • @AllenSJ5
“He’s a god on drums.” Yes, he is.
  • @Forkez
There's a strange joy to watching someone truly appreciate a song that you yourself are a fan of.
  • @sk8er138
In 2008, they would delay the first "eyeballs deep" by a beat or two so the crowd would create that pre-echo effect for him. It was so cool to experience.
  • I like to think that after she does the analysis she replays the song with the camera off, cranks up the volume, and just totally rocks out
  • @2secondslater
Justin Chancellor, the bassist, playing the bass guitar, is one of the most underappreciated members of any band, not just Tool, but any band. He carries Tool's songs from start to finish and nobody seems to hear the intricacies of how he does it.
  • @katchmarik7393
That chuckling "Cool" at the end of the song sums up every Tool fan's reaction after every first listen. We ALL sound like Butt-head in those moments. ❤🤣
  • @gmccrarygm
I think one of Tool's biggest secrets of what makes their music so great and extremely powerful and intense is that all four instruments allow space for the other 3 and none of them ever seem out of place for this...knowing what NOT to play is half the trick.
  • I like this woman. She has such passion. 😊 She points out things I would have never considered.
  • I don't believe there is a single Tool song that uses only one time signature. From learning 'Schism' on drums, I can assure you that Carey's rhythmic fluidity is utterly flawless. Bars of 5/8, 7/8, 6/8 and 2/4 all woven together seamlessly.
  • This is the album where Maynard dealt with his Mother's death after years of struggle and pain. The emotions are super high.
  • @Floydisgr8
One of the things I love about this channel is that she explains to me, technically, why I love the songs that I love.
  • Honestly, Danny is the best argument for the existence of aliens I've ever seen
  • @SpokiOki
one of the rarest guitarist that plays where you feel like there are 2 guitars but its one. and he is killing it with effects. no one uses guitar like him. Maestro
  • @EGlideKid
Well done, Elizabeth. I’m 64 and just discovered Tool 6 years ago - shame on me. They’re easily of my favorite bands now. Just incredible musicianship, all around.
  • @mikeynma
Listener: What time signature is this in? Danny: Yes.
  • @greyfade
30:38 - There's no resolution there, because it resolves into the next track on the album, "Lipan Conjuring." The whole album is composed to be experienced as a single 75-minute track.
