John O'Leary is one of the early exponents of the blues harmonica in the UK. Originally from Ireland, John's family was part of the mass migration to England in the aftermath of World War 2. In London's thriving jazz clubs of the 1960's, he first heard blues harp legend Cyril Davies with Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated. John bought his first harp in 1962 and initially learned by watching Davies. Inevitably, he discovered the great masters of the instrument John Lee Williamson, Little Walter, Noah Lewis, Big Walter Horton, James Cotton, Sonny Terry and Junior Wells whose influences are still readily discernible in his playing.
John's career has seen his involvement with a wide range bands and musicians over five decades. Beginning in 1965 as a founder member of Savoy Brown's Blues Band through to the present day John O'Leary & Sugarkane, he has continued to maintain a prominent position on the European blues scene.
Over the years John has performed with noted bands and musicians such as Donovan, Noel Redding, Eric Bell, Kim Simmonds, Champion Jack Dupree, Alexis Korner, Roger Chapman, Dave Walker, Tony McPhee, Dave Kelly, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Aynsley Dunbar, Keef "Half Breed" Hartley, Victor Brox, The John Dummer Blues Band & Mainsqueeze. Today, as well as leading his own band Sugarkane, he is concurrently a member of the legendary rockers The Downliners Sect and co-leader of the John O'Leary-Alan Glen All Star Blues Review; which for the past 10 years has hosted annual tributes to Muddy Waters, Junior Wells and Cyril Davies.
In 2011 and 2013 John was voted No 2 in the harmonica category by BLUES MATTERS magazine's contributors and writers.

    Im a recovering heroiy addict. I went to a beautiful rehab in LA and did 30 days. Everyone one was begging me to stay at least a few more months causs 30 days aint enough. I have two beautiful daughters i cant even see because the day i got back i go hammered drunk two days later i was back shooting heroin. My wife dosent want anything to do with me anymore and i truly in my heart love this woman i really do. The pain in my soul is crushing me and im falling right back into addiction. I drink every day and and i just feel as if ive let everyone around me down because i promised my daughters i was gonna change and i haven't even seen them in like two weeks. Im hurting and i dont kno what to do anymore. I miss my girls i miss my wife and i miss being sober. It's two o'clock in the morning and im crying my eyes out listening to this song. Ive ruined my family and all my friend ships and i kno it is my fault. I just want to be a dad again a husband again just a normal person again. I got the blues and the depression is killing me. I found a few minutes of comfort in knowing that im not the first person to feel hurt ashamed and regretful. I said all that to say this if you struggle with addiction of any kind because its all the same just don't give up hope and try your hardest to stay sober. Its the hardest thing in the world and its so worth it cause when u take one drink one hit what ever it is that one is two much and a 1000 will never be enough. I can tell u from experience that you will end up right back wheee you started or lower than you were to being with. Im not trying to preach but damn man it hurts! I miss my two beautiful babies and my wife that but up with 10 years of addiction and now it may be to late to fix it. Do everything you can to not fall causs getting sober the first time is relatively easy but after you fall again its the hardest thing in my life anyway to get back up. The blues eases the pain temporarily be cause pain is what makes the blues what it is. Anyway if your and alcoholic or addict that happens to be right back at the bottom i kno how much it sucks im gonna finsih this bottle and smoke cigarettes till the sun comes up. To my wife i love u from the deepest part of my soul and to my beautiful little girls im sorry i made your life hell but i love u more than life itself and I hope one day you will forgive me. Help me lord because the weight of this disease its too much for me to bare. Cheers everyone bottoms up maybe one day we will change but today's not it apparently. Peace
