What does it mean to be super posh in the 21st century, and can rich Russians buy their way in to the upper classes? Subscribe to Our Stories: bit.ly/3lzSXhv

The traditional, British upper-class world that Tatler reports on is changing. Features editor Sophia Money-Coutts travels from castle to castle in Scotland to find out what the toffs there think of Scottish Independence and how their world is affected. She meets Lord Palmer in his 109-room Edwardian pile and Lady Christine de la Rue who is struggling with the upkeep of her castle and being forced to move out.

Over in Moscow, we meet the staff of Tatler Russia, launched five years ago and run by editor, Ksenia Solovieva. Here they report on the emerging Russian super-rich elite who are trying to create their own high society and look to British upper-class traditions to help them. Tatler Russia is leading the way by helping them find the best British boarding schools to send their kids to and hosting a debutante ball for the young daughters of Russia's most powerful families.

  • When your gran is displeased because a note was not delivered upon a silver salver, then you KNOW that you are an Aristocrat 🤣

This is actually a very well made documentary, I like how it doesn't take sides on the class system, more it just offers a window in to it. The most impactful part of this documentary is how Russian money was pouring into Britain. I very much doubt there is a Russian Tatler now!

Anyone else get the sense that Tatler is just posh TMZ?

It honestly infuriates me that people don't understand why we as Scottish people hate this kind of thing. I would say that 95% of the people living in our large grand houses don't actually connect with the country, don't talk like us, have no connection to us or how we act and spend most of their time out of the country in London. Edited since the only argument someone has is that I made a typo 🥱

    A 2024 re-visit would be interesting.

I liked the last guy. He is very well aware of himself and the world. His statement about who deserves to have these properties is spot on. I wish they had spent more time with him, by far the most interesting of the people interviewed.

    F. Scott Fitzgerald said “ The rich are very different from you and me.” Ernest Hemingway‘s response was “ Yes, they have more money💰.”

What is it with posh people's obsession with dead things in their houses? It's proper grim 🤢
  • @fleurpoets
as a scottish person the way they treat my country without knowing our history so carelessly is disgusting
  • That lord palmer guy... his accent is so stereotypical, that its amazing.

33:50 She confuses cause and effect. Historically, marriages were entered into for strategic reasons, and since the pool for such marriages was limited, effects of inbreeding became visible. Since the aristocracy lost their power and influence, they were more free to marry who they wanted, hence the current state of affairs.

Honestly, some of the stuff that comes out of their mouths is wild. It's stunning to see how disconnected these people are. Especially the staff that like to pretend that they're middle class but still went to public schools and were able to use their connects to receive jobs that, honestly, most of them are not qualified to do. It's also wild to me that as a Canadian, I can understand where the average Scottish person is coming from with Scotland leaving and these posh people that actually live in the country can't. Especially knowing the history of Scotland. I honestly just spent most of my time through this series in shock. The only redeeming thing was the nanny bit, and even that was just sad. That most of the children growing up had a closer relationship and saw their nannies more than they saw their parents. Yiiiiiiiiiikes.

Mr Max has done an absolutely superb job with Easton Neston. It's a pity he didn't buy the furniture that went with the house, but the contents he has are perfect. I hope he will be happy there (and in his other five houses...).
  • That deputy editor Alice comes across as totally hopeless. How did she get her job? Because of her social standing. That does my head in
  • @marygoodson4920
I loved the clueless "sculptress" lady in the middle who didn't know that England invaded Scotland and took it over...she said 'why fix something that isn't broken." Ugh.
  • @AlbionTVLondon
Oh dear. Tatler in Russia. Have they not been kicked out yet? Is there not enough of these caricature vanity papers in addition to OK and Hello?
  • The Russian Tatler bit is quite interesting but I really rolled my eyes when they were calling the photographed people "heroes". Really? Maybe they should recheck the definition. I really enjoy this series though.
  • Half of the land owned by less than 500 people yet 1/5th of the country is in poverty...
