Why PS5 Is Succesful Without "True" Exclusive Games

Recently Sony announced that PlayStation 5 console sales have hit 59.2 million, just slightly under PS4 on a launch aligned basis. Adding to that, we know PS5 is generating more money and is a more profitable platform vs. PS4, which we know is one of the best selling consoles of all time. And yet, there's been a lot of consternation surrounding PS5's game exclusivity. Namely that is just doesn't have that many. They're either timed exclusives, cross-gen, or they get a PC release. So what gives? Well today we'll do some digging and throw out an opinion piece. Here's why the console is doing so well. And also, here's a picture of a cat. *gestures forward, but this is a YouTube description so there's actually nothing

A lot of my friends REALLY underestimate the popularity of the PlayStation Brand outside the US. They always think that US is the only country that matter when it comes to PlayStation sales. They still don't believe that the PS is selling, but it is infarct doing so.
  • The statement “PS5 in is its latter years” just makes me more excited for the future of this console, since most of PS3 & PS4’s major exclusives came during their latter years too!
  • @Sassle16
People buy stuff from companies who they have good history with. And we've seen multiple companies fail because they had also trusted that good history a bit too much...

Remember that just having lots of exclusives doesn't automatically mean massive success. The Wii U had lots of exclusive games, but that doesn't mean it was successful.

Backwards compatibility has been carrying this entire gen so far for me. Really a shame many next gen titles haven’t been put out considering how good of a console the ps5 is

Playstation has one of the most diverse audiences of any ecosystem imo. You have the exclusive players playing God of War, Spiderman etc or the casual players playing the yearly release game like COD or FIFA, live service players, third party jrpgs player (persona, final fantasy), PSVR players, subscription players. Together they add up a very healthy number of players imo. Playstation also always align themselves with high profile 3rd party games that has huge success on consoles like Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Silent Hill, Metal Gear and especially the Rockstar games.

PS5 exclusives NEED to matter though, and we need them to have the quality that we expect from "next gen".
  • @cringo08
Ps5 is truely the "Remake/Remasters" generation.
  • @battlep0t
Another thing is trophies - I know not everyone cares about them but for some reason to those who have a completionist mindset the allure of a platinum is more appealing than Gamerscore or Steam Achievements
  • @mikem2253
Cross gen is here to stay going forward. Kind of like PC- multiple specs for the same game. These console are basically PCs.
  • @sendingevac
If I have to pick between backwards compatibility and unique game libraries, I think I’d pick backwards compatibility
  • @morsecode980
While exclusives may not be necessary anymore, I still miss them. PS had some great ones: Killzone, Resistance, Modnation, Uncharted, Jak and Daxter, WipeOut. I wish some of those series’ would come back
  • @jonbarnettvevo
I just want more devs to utilize the SSD like insomniac has
  • @VortexS4
PS5 is successful without selling exclusives because the general non-gaming public and casual audience recognize the brand, that's it, buy the $500 paper weight and let it dust in in the back if your tv and play call of duty/fifa once a week. Thats it, most people just buy a PS5 because they had a PS2 or one of their cousins had a PS2, simple brand recognition.
  • We need more AA games. Not everything has to be on par with THE LAST OF US 2. I’d be happy with games looking like JAK 1, WIPEOUT HD, FINAL FANTASY X. I wish we had more platformers, racing games without 2000 options and people telling you what to do 😅 bring back SIMPLICITY and release more and shorter games.
  • @starstruckjoker
"PC releases haven't harmed the brand" - But Sony only began PC-releases after the PS5 launched. I wonder how many PS5-owners will move to PC next gen, knowing that all Playstation "exclusives" will eventually arrive on it.
  • @romahawk3125
Man, your video is a breath of fresh air. Everytime I am on YouTube I see people whining about how bad this console generation is spreading only negativity. It's good to see someone having faith, (if you can put it like this :)). I hope that during the final days of PS5, Sony will release some bangers that not only consist of sequels to ongoing franchises but especially bring innovation to the gaming portfolio (perhaps even a new genre). This is something the gaming industry truly needs right now.
  • Sony have basically removed the need to own a PS5 and made the PS5 more unappealing. If you have a PC you can get their games for free and on top of that you don't need PS+ for multiplayer access. So in summary I don't need to buy a $500 console I don't need to buy $70 games and I don't need to give them $50 a month or PS+. Sony are complete boneheads this generation when it comes to business strategy. Ghosts of Tsushima was has sold around 70k on Steam and there were over 500k people seeding it on a certain website.
