In today's video, we take a deeper look at Modern Horizons 3's outlying powerhouse - and how it might affect formats like Modern and Commander ongoing.

There is no greater sign of power creep than a bird that can't be bolted.
  • Something else that makes Nadu stupid is that if it is flickered or bounced, all instances of the effect it gives are reset, even though the creatures getting the effect from Nadu are the same.
  • @Shadow1patin
FYI for people in the comments: all the red decks have moved on to Harsh Mentor instead of Ignus since it is more consistent damage and hates out more than just Nadu.
  • @qarsiseer
It’s wild they printed Nadu like this when they knew triggering off of your own abilities was bad in 2013 when they made Heroic.
  • @DabbleDo
The fact this costs the same as Oko is very funny. Feels the same too. A bunch of little decisions that add up to a mistake. Too much toughness, twice per turn, doesn’t draw, lands enter untapped.. too much gas.
  • I don't like how in LotR we got a really good new anti-creature tool in Stern Scolding and anti-card advantage tool in Orcish Bowmasters and Nadu cares about neither. It feels like we're getting weirdly templated, over-stated creatures in order to beat all of the answer cards that were created to deal with the last generation of nonsense (Stern Scolding was designed when Lurrus was legal in Modern.)
  • @MenwithHill
We have gone past Commanders that are both the setup and the payoff and now we just have The Payoff™ (to playing the game in any way).
  • @huddleaw
This is one of the few cards I've read and knew immediately how busted it was. If I was able to catch this, how did it get past R&D? I think Growth Spiral effects usually are way better than they look.
  • Not only is it really strong but it's also a super long combo and it's a nightmare to keep track of on paper. This card is a mistake, not because it's too strong but because it's just the most annoying thing anyone can do in the game (and also it's really fucking strong)

Hearing people utter those words nearly lost to time "block constructed" always brings me back to the absolute blast that was Innistrad block and the goofiness of Lorwyn block.
  • @tapedeccard
Bird is the word and I’m like “Nah, dude.”
  • @Domekarl
or they could print shuko in the next secret lair $$$
  • @thetrinketmage
Damn we posted the same vid at around the same time. Great minds think alike lol
  • @JustforKikX
I've actually met a few people recently, that, for EDH, have said they refuse to play against Nadu. I can't speak to his impact in other formats though.
  • @Billchu13
Whose idea was it to have it trigger twice? Is this a skull clamp situation?
  • @Aldrnari956
I’m convinced that the twice per turn limit was intended to be across the board across all of your creatures but they bunged up the templating and made it limited to twice per creature on accident.

I play in a competitive brawl league. We play with original verions of non alchemy cards due to how direct challenges work. Nadu is still (probably) the best commander in the entire format. It's insane and something needs to be done about it. The negative perception of Nadu reaches far greater than the loud minorities of reddit or discord. It's broken even without access to Shuko
  • @GreatWhiteElf
Wotc has been creating card effects recently, where you literally can't whiff on the effect. Like Nadu would not be a problem if it didn't put cards in your hand. I get that whiffing sucks, but anything that interacts with your library should have a null result if you get unlucky. Then broken stuff like this would be a lot less common
