During the 2020 pandemic, I was at my lowest point. I was stressed, unemployed, and dealing with a lot of uncertainty. Ultimately, what got me out was researching anthropology, and uncovering the different social causes of mental illness. I hope the information in this video helps you just as much as it helped me.

With that said, this is research on all the information I could find on how anthropology and evolution affect mental illness, please take it at face value and always do your own research as well.

Note - I didn't add music to this video because I thought it would help get the information across better, let me know what you think, should I add it next time?

Warning
I want to clarify that this isn't medical advice, and you should always follow what your doctor says/prescribes. Instead, this was just a tool I used that help me solve the problems in my life and ultimately get out of my depression.

i love the way you summarized this video at the end "another tool in your toolkit" this is what my therapist and i have been working on since i've become blind, adding tools to my toolkit great video! cant wait for more homie!
  • Wow I can’t believe how much I learned in 20 minutes. This video could have easily been an hour plus long. The fact depression serves an evolved function is crazy to think about and really shifts the way you think about it. People with depression need to hear this take on it. I haven’t ever heard it before I loved the summary at the end as well ❤ that was real.
  • Really loved this video! Hope to see more like it from this channel! ❤

This literally explains everything. Thank you so much for making this video
  • Internal inhibition is what I think makes this theory actually hold some weight. It’s crazy to think that some lizards lose their colours and simply die because of it

I think you might like the book "Mutual Aid" by Peter Kropotkin? Cool video, my therapist has learned to talk to me in evolutionary terms :)

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:29 🧠 Understanding the evolutionary basis of mental illness, particularly depression, helped the creator overcome anxiety during the pandemic. 01:25 🔄 Low self-esteem, low confidence, depression, and anxiety may stem from a sense of defeat and entrapment, rooted in perceived lower status within a social hierarchy. 02:50 🌍 Evolutionary shift to group living in animals 300 million years ago led to the development of social rank and safety systems, influencing emotions and moods based on perceived social standing. 05:08 🤝 Importance of group belonging in humans for physical and mental health, driven by the need for acceptance through similarity in social networks and alliances. 09:18 🐒 Involuntary subordinate strategy in chimpanzees involves submissive behaviors, internal inhibition, and physical changes to regulate social bonds within a group hierarchy. 13:47 💭 Depression's adaptive role: Depressed individuals engage in productive ruminations, breaking down complex problems for effective problem-solving, supported by the 5 ht1a receptor's involvement. 15:38 🔄 Social meter hypothesis suggests self-esteem is a monitoring system for social cues, impacting mental health; lower self-esteem and anxiety result from perceived exclusion. 19:18 🔄 Confidence and mental health struggles may reflect our brain's evaluation of social standing; addressing social problems and introspective work can be a valuable tool in overcoming anxiety and depression. what might happen, if we show wild chimpanzees videos or demonstrations of human judo competitions? can we show them a way to subdue their opponents without causing lasting physical-trauma?

Much of the fallout we are incurring today comes from the crappy food supply! Quit eating that highly/ultra processed crap! you will feel so much better I bet! Sugar is the fat problem not fat or cholesterol. Limit added sugar intake also you will feel better I swear.
