Is the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad actually the most scenic train ride in America? We think it might be! What are your favorite train rides?

We get spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains, the San Juan National Forest, the Animas River, and the historic mining town of Silverton, CO on the Durango Train:

I’ve been on the Durango-Silverton rail ride twice in my life. As a child and as an adult. It never gets old.
  • @kareniceland
I loved Marissa"s face, when you said. " We did bring lunch ?' That was priceless.

WITHOUT A DOUBT, IT'S WORTH IT!!!!! My dad was born in Durango, and I've been on the train many times over the decades. Summer trips, winter trips, you name it. I have a lot of family all over the SW Colorado, and NM area. My Great grandfather and great-great grandparents rode that train in the late 1800's I did the cascade winter train with the actual owner of the train, who happened to be taking the ride, hell of a nice guy, like a kid playing with his trains.

We have loved Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass WV for many years. We went with our parents as kids then we took our kids. They still sell a postcard at their store of a stagecoach they used years ago as an attraction and my husband, at the age of 13, is riding beside the driver! Now he is 63! Thanks for your train video!

Check out the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway in Chama, NM. Not too far from Durango. It is really scenic, too. (Hint: take the run that goes half way and stops for lunch at the Osier station, and comes back to Chama - Best run, especially with kids!!) Lots of beautiful camping in or near Chama.

Not to be missed along with this train ride is their amazing (and included free) museum. It is just down the path from the depot. It is collection of actual planes, trains, & automobiles. It is owned by the family that owns the train and is one of the most interesting museums I have ever been in.

If your in the neighborhood of Skagway, AK.... ride the railroad going to the Canada boarder. It follows the route that the 1898 gold miners took to get the Klondike. Each person had to carry food and supplies to last the entire trail plus mining supplies. Most miners had to traverse the 'stairway' 2 or more times.

There is a train in Central CA that goes from Felton to Santa Cruz. (3 hour tour) It is an awesome train ride through the redwoods and fern groves and drops you right off at the Santa Cruz Beach boardwalk!! It was really fun. There is also another one that is called Redwood Forest Steam Train that takes you up on the top of a nearby mountain. It is a 75 minute ride. Both of these are out of Roaring Camp in Felton, CA. We enjoyed them both!!

My favorite train ride so far is Anchorage to Denali National Park, (it goes to Fairbanks but we didn’t take it that far), Absolutely beautiful.
  • There is a Texas State Railroad in Palestine, TX. It is an old train they used to have a train robbery re-enactment. We did it years ago when our kids were small. They enjoyed it, my husbands back did not enjoy it.
  • Ride the Cumbres and Toltec from Chama New Mexico to Antinito Colorado. It is an all day thing, you might want to let Jay Jay get a little older. But if you like scenery and trains it is a must.
  • @lefturn99
Durango / Silverton #1 of course but the Cumbres and Toltec from Chama NM to Antonito Colorado (Do it that way) not far behind.
  • @1134EMP
Cumbres and Toltec from Chama, NM to Antonito,CO is definitely worth riding. Let us know which one was better.
  • @larryclark5355
I was an electrician on NJ Transit, the headlight is a federal requirement for safety. Most people ignore the multi-ton engine coming at them but notice the headlight when they hear the horn. I went to many a collision where people did not see the train! HUH!!
  • @joeyoung3390
In 1969 we drove up Mt Washington on our honeymoon, 50 years later we camped at the bottom in the parking lot for the cog railway and took it to the top through the clouds. It was fantastic both times. Stay safe from Nova Scotia.
  • @gthornton3
Y’all need to do the cog railway in Colorado Springs We have done it 2 times. They just reopened.
  • A very short ride is from Utica, NY to Thendara, NY on the Adirondack Railroad. Some excursions are complete with “train robbers” on horses! Our adult children still talk about it from when they were little.
  • @riwoof
I am absolutely stunned how conversational JJ is already. I think I felt the same way when Hensley was that age. Time truly has wings. 🦄 Or was that Hensley's unicorn?
  • @cathybeall986
Beautiful family, beautiful kiddos and a beautiful train ride. Thank you!
  • @douglastoney2843
The Durango Silverton is the best by far. The California Zephr on AMTRAK runs from Chicago to San Francisco. It is fabulous. Sunsets over the amber waves of grain in the plains Southwest from Chicago. Then, traverse the Rocky Mountains between Denver and Grand Junction through Glenwood Canyon beside a roaring river.
