WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE THE STRONGEST? Gojo and All Might are the best examples of "The Strongest" archetype. Not only are they incredibly powerful, they are just as tragic and fascinating to dissect as characters. Even though My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen are vastly different series in almost every way outside of them being Shonen, Gojo and All Might share a lot of similarities in how they are written. In ways I think the average anime/manga fan don't appreciate enough. So let's start a dialogue! Lets break down Satoru Gojo and All Might to understand the Burden Of Being The Strongest.

My Hero Academia (Japanese: 僕のヒーローアカデミア, Hepburn: Boku no Hīrō Akademia) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kōhei Horikoshi. It has been serialized in Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump since July 2014, with its chapters collected in 40 tankōbon volumes as of April 2024. Set in a world where superpowers (called "Quirks") have become commonplace, the story follows Izuku Midoriya, a boy who was born without a Quirk but still dreams of becoming a superhero himself. He is scouted by the world's greatest hero, All Might, who bestows his Quirk to Midoriya after recognizing his potential, and helps to enroll him in a prestigious high school for superheroes in training.

Getting a decent amount of comments about the JJK Spoilers. I apologize to anyone who was spoiled by the panels. That is on me. I did my best to keep from saying any spoilers for this video but I neglected to tell the editor for this video to not use any major manga events in the series so my bad. All images are out of context but if you were spoiled, I apologize⭐

Imagine being Jaden Smith watching a video about Gojo and All Might and just getting absolutely roasting mid video
  • My favorite thing about all might is that even after his "spiritual" death/retirement, he continued and continued to have direct influence on the story.
  • @ian7064
I'm glad you mentioned the decline in the quality of pro heroes in MHA due to All Mights presence. They had a washing machine in their top 10 hero ranking for God's sake. I also like how we're shown the way so many "pros" outright quit or retire when the situation in Japan really starts to go downhill. It tells us that they weren't in the field for the right reasons
  • @GrayOpossum
I agree. This is because All Might literally had crime rates down due to just his presence. And as for Gojo, he literally forced curses to be stronger when he was born, and he always would save the day, causing powerful curses to run away from him.

Thanks for not spoiling the manga like everyone else does when they talk about JJK
  • @ClockwiseStuff
As someone who is writing a story with this kind of characters thanks for this
  • @goku324ah
Its funny that these two were being compared, i almost forgot that Horakoshi and Akutami and like bffs irl, shit each has done different cover art for the others series, great vid.
  • @spookeg5812
Love the vid but my favourite example of the strongest is levi ackerman, for him, being the strongest means always being the last one surviving, bringing home the bad news of everyone dying, having to constantly fight because everyone depends on you. Its so bittersweet when he doesn’t revive erwin because he deserves rest and when he himself is about to die and see his comrades like with hange, he instead has to get back up and continue fighting. Imo he is the best example of why being the strongest is such a burden
  • @joecroft4274
I enjoy both author’s depictions on what it means to be the strongest in their respective universes as well as the differences in their burdens. All Might is burdened with powerlessness in a literal sense as he is presence caused complacency and now that his power is being taken away from him the world is becoming more dangerous as evil has been waiting for this moment where the number 1 hero is no longer All Might. Gojo on the other hand isn’t literally powerless but more in regards to is agency. He is limited by the laws of the world he encompasses and his obligation forces him to sometimes do things he wouldn’t want to do. I don’t think anybody has ever talked about this before but both times when there’s a highly dangerous teenager taken in by Jujutsu Technical School the person we see interact with them first is Gojo. Yuta and Yuji both have almost the same exact interaction when being told about their execution. I don’t think this is the first time Gojo has done this either, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Gojo had that conversation more than twice and likely delivered executions himself.

One of my favorite "The Strongest" characters that really don't get seen in this light but definitely are, is Kaido from One Piece. He has the literal title "The Strongest Creature" but in the story he is not narratively centralized as the strongest but when you consider the context of the verse he definitely does fit "The Strongest" archetype. It's stated multiple times, being an entire plot point aftet their arc, that his mear presence drives danger away from his land, Wano. He is the Symbol of Peace for Wano whether the people like it or not. Despite his horrid desregard for the people under him, he keeps them safe. Dubed a God in Wano and feared by the World Government. He also had a Fall From Grace. His defeat by Luffy had immense ramifications for the world. His defeat leaving a void for Luffy to take his place and cement himself as a genuine power within the world. Kaido also does Inspire The Youth. It is in a interesting way but like I was saying before with Luffy he was essentially ment to be surpassed by him if Luffy were to achieve his dream. In other ways he did inspire the youth although in a negative way and most of those people are the people that joined his crew but mainly, King was his "Yuji". Where it's a more indirect passing on but he will take his place eventually.

I want to mention that Satoru Gojo did in fact take out Gato, it is literally a huge plot point in Season Two that it seems like Gojo didn’t kill Gato but later on it’s revealed that he did kill him, but the curse user took over his dead body.
  • @CorthosFellrin
I'd say Gojo is my favorite of this type of character along with All Might and I think Kakashi counts? Idk. As long as they don't keep the show on them forever... The archetype is great.
  • @quinnjamin01
Yamamoto from Bleach comes to mind, at least in regards to complacency. It’s literally stated several times by characters like Yhwach that the Gotei 13 are a shadow of who they once were and it’s pretty much directly a result of Yamamoto slaughtering the quincies in the days of yore. Yamamoto himself even states that because he’s in the Soul Society, “There is no better security”. And it’s understandable as to why, as well. I mean with a Bankai that literally erases moisture from the atmosphere among other stupid broken feats he’s not called a monster or beast for nothing, terrifying old man.
  • @SamTheGumMan117
I think Sinbad from Magi is a great example of "The Strongest" out there in animanga
  • I’d love to get your thoughts on the inner demon trope in fiction. It’s usually a pretty straightforward trope, where the demon is a means for the character to express feelings either they repress or society forces them too. (Eg Eren’s titan is a means to express his animalistic drive for freedom, Ichigo’s hollow is a means to get power and explore his desire to protect at the expense of his guilt, Naruto and black clover are kinda similar too, etc). JJK kinda flips it on its head since society and Sukuna try to make yuji repress his humanity for his desire to get strong and protect others but it’s due to Sukuna and the desire to overcome him that he wants to become stronger. There are probably more examples that explore and even break this trope and I’d love to hear your thoughts!
