It has been exactly 50 years since China took control of the Paracel Islands, a group of 130 small islets and reefs in the South China Sea, lying between China’s Hainan Island and Vietnam. On January 19, 1974, the Chinese military attacked a Vietnamese garrison based on Prattle Island. This day became known as the Battle of the Paracels.

In January this year, the Vietnamese government stated its claim to both the Paracel and Spratly Islands, saying Vietnam has "full legal basis and ample historical evidence" to assert its sovereignty.

Unity is strength! Small countries in Asia can unite to protect their territories.
  • The Paracels and Spratly were under the juridiction of the former Republic of South Vietnam following the Geneva Conference dividing Vietnam into two at the 17th parallel and the PRC was a signatory of the agreement. Anything below the 17th parallel such as the Paracels belongs to Saigon government and the Hanoi government has no juridiction over the South China Sea islands. Those islands were effectively administered since the 17th century by the Nguyen dynasty which has left loads of artefacts in Vietnam. Whoever claims sovereignty over the island must show proof of administration which the PRC has failed to do. Throughout history, China is essentially an inward looking country, completely ignoring its surrounding seas. In fact, during the Qing dynasty maps of China clearly indicates that the southernmost territory of China is Hainan island, completely omitting the South China Sea. The PRC's claim that the SCS belongs to China since ancient times is a fallacy, Italy never claims the whole Mediterranean by virtue of the ancient Roman Empire! The Spratlys were occupied by Japan during WWII and the 1953 San Francisco Conference was convened to strip Japan of its conquests and return them them to their rightful owners, the Spratlys should be returned to Vietnam. Somehow Taiwan illegally occupied Tai Ping Island. In fact both China and Taiwan have no business being in the SCS.

Unlike a particular nation that yielded to China, Vietnam has steadfastly asserted its territorial claims. Remarkably, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, China has engaged in economic dealings with Vietnam. In contrast, the mentioned country that yielded has seemingly gained little from its compliance.
  • Vietnam was in the last process of unification in 74. The country suffered greatly in their long series of anti-colonial wars of sovereignty. Reconstituting their nation was on the front burner. The CCP preyed on their weakness in this context. When China invaded Vietnam at the end of the decade…the border war was a loss by the CCP. Vietnam now is back on the track of growth and wants to develop the territorial and sea resources in their 200 mile economic zone. This is their right, and should not have to

There is no controversial about it. CCP took Paracel islands by force after murdered 53 Vietnamese sailors!

Very informative. Thank you for putting this interview together.

Taiwanese companies should leave China and relocate to the Philippines. Both the Philippines and Taiwan can help each other build a far stronger economic position against China.

I really think this pushback of Vietnam (vis-a-vis their lost Paracel Islands) are recent and from 3 things: 1. Rapprochement with the United States starting with Bill Clinton, and advanced by Joe Biden (the Americans have finally realized that Vietnam is a useful ally in the South China Sea in a push-back against the CCP), 2. Pushback relating to the US support of the Philippines coast guard and navy: The Philippines is a rival country claiment bordering against Vietnam in the South China Sea, but this rivalry between Philippines and Vietnam is put aside to collaborate in pushback against the CCP and PLAN in the South China Sea. 3. The US has offered to sell F-16's to Vietnam, including training their combat pilots in F-16 flying . These warplanes are superior to their current old Russian warplanes. This is a bargaining chip that Vietnam might use to force quiet backdown of China at least in the Spatly Islands.

Viet here, 1. Henry Kissinger did made a deal with China behind Vietnam "now you know why CPP love Kissinger", US know it will be endless war and likely not able to defeat N.Vietnam when they got support from USSR and China. 2. After Kissinger deal, China want to test the deal if US will hold up their agreement by invade and take the islands. 3. US know exact day/timeframe when China attack, this is written/comment from US/S.VN prisoners. US did ask S.Vietnam to stand down not to retaliate. 4. N.Vietnam Vietcong believe they rather have their friend China take over the islands than their enemy "their own brothers S.Vietnam". Vietcong rather keep the communist party than their motherland territories. 5. Every year, the Vietcong try to hide their hideous intention back in 1970 but the Viet people will not give up. 6. After 50 yrs, CIA did released top secret documents about Diem/Nhu death, which relate to Kennedy. Diem does not want US troops in Vietnam since that will cause the people to side with N.Vietnam as "nationalist". The CIA setup and spread rumor Diem suppress buddishm religion and the burning monk "not self immolation". The monk who douse and lit the senior unconscious monk is a Vietcong and hide in US embassy for protection. All this is inside CIA documents, which align with Viet people understanding. 7. US is about interest, and S.Vietnam is no longer US best interest because they want to focus on USSR. 8. US never give S.Vietnam a chance to be self-reliance or determine their freedom and fate 9. I hope US don't stab Ukraine or Taiwan back like they did to S.Vietnam.
