A True Classic - A Full Supreme Commander Aeon Campaign Commentary

2024-02-03に共有
I remembered Supreme Commander exists, and that we don't need any other games. Here's a commentary on my playthrough of the Aeon campaign, vaguely throwing out takes about the game and talking generally about how I got on with each stage.

If you liked this, then here's good news: I also played Supreme Commander Forged Alliance, and a very similar video on that will be coming soon!

I STILL love hearing your voice reviewing games. Makes me smile every damn time. You are a general and a king good sir.
  • Less than a minute in: "Once again [...] I am going to be FORCED, to hit you, with the *they don't make them like they used to*. I don't want to be like this guys. The thing is, that at least in this field, they genuenly don't make them like they used to. And I think investigating why that is could be interesting because... can't they? They should make this, but better, shouldn't they? Who's they?" 1 hours and 34 minutes left. Aaaaahhh, that OffyD Game Grounds content. Oh shit! It includes Lore rants? Honestly, how did I doubt about this.
  • Oh, by the way, the multiplayer scene of Supreme Commander is still alive today with the Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance Forever mod/client. It doesn't change much of the game and the whole economy control and stuff is insane. Also, they fixed some of the performance bottlenecks so now clouds of Air Superiority Fighters engaging no longer chugs every computer known to man.
  • So, there are actually quite a few attempts to replace Supreme Commander: Plantary Annihilation, Industrial Annihilation, Sanctuary Shattered Suns, Zero K, and Beyond All Reason. Problem is, I think all of them will ultimately struggle, for the same reason that live service games are struggling: multiplayer is the main selling point for all of them, so things like AI, story telling, and animations (which multiplayer people won't have time to look at,) don't matter as much, often leaving these elements ignored. But because it's much easier to make games like that, they also stand out less, and casual fans won't be lured in; so, the games become something for die hards, and they're much more likely to play a game that's proven to have kept its player base in the long term.
  • I am just waiting for Devin to upload Supreme Sommander: Forged Alliance video which he would see the fabled Fourth faction and play as that while ranting how good it could have been when 'they' re-made it now.
  • I played the crap out of Supreme Commander as a kid. I'm not very far in but I'm sure Devin will cover all the adjacency bonuses that boosts the economy. Love to see this on the channel!

This really brought back memories. I dust off SupCom every few years, but it's always FA, never the original one, i had completely forgotten how different it was. Looking forward to your commentary on FA.
  • You're quite right RTS games used to have this platonic characterizaton of a Rational faction, a Passional one and a Spiritual one. Never saw Supreme Comander before, really seems ground-breaking for the era. Thank you Devin for showing us!
  • @Wlexik
Paying up my student loan has even more complex economic system.
  • I was afraid to play this game because it sounded like I needed to be good at RTS to play it, but looks like I was wrong. Thanks Devon for the encouragement!
  • When you run out of power, the mass extractors start to turn off because they require a small amount of power to keep producing. That's why the economy tanks when the power tanks. Awesome video though!

I would love to see you play The Matchless Kunfu

God, I spent way too many hours in Supreme Commander during Highschool. It's one of the strategy games that never quite lets you go
  • One of the best things about SC (apart from the fact that it STILL has working multiplayer matchmaking and community thanks to FAF and Gylecast) is that if you lose a mission, you can still progress and finish the campaign! This was a trick inherited from Total Annihilation and I wish more games did it!
  • @Darth_Valken
Ooh yeah, Supreme Commander! One of the greats for sure. Played it a ton as a kid
  • OffyD just can’t help hit ‘em with the game commentary “they don’t make ‘em like they used to”
  • Oh the glorious 2D icons! It's one of the biggest what-ifs for the genre, as in what would Total War be like if they zoomed out instead of zooming in with pretty but pointless 3D stuff, basically a Kings&Generals TW (btw I can't believe how that hasn't been done yet, literally an instant buy for thousands of subscribers and frustrated grumpy TW fans). Anyway, since you've talked about the economy for 2 seconds, here's my suggestion: Offworld Trading Company! No wars, just good old space capitalism. Also, after you finish the tutorial, the game still recommends a few skirmish matches for practice before you go into the campaign, so you know it's great for an offyd blind run
  • After watching this I highly recommend rusted warfare, it's only 5 USD on steam and often on sale for less than 3 but has much the same energy
