And because Steamboat Geyser likes to mess with us...it just erupted on December 30 at 7:02 PM MST, a few hours after this video was posted. The eruption was well detected by the new infrasound monitoring station in Norris Geyser Basin. This brings the total number of Steamboat Geyser eruptions for the year to 9.

Thank you, Mike and all the USGS teams for all the information we get throughout the year. Looking forward to what's in store for 2024.
  • Really enjoy the Yellowstone update videos. I wouldn't call myself a geology nerd by any stretch, but I've found it interesting since I was a child. Thanks for all you do!

Great job USGS! This is definitely a system we need to understand and monitor and I appreciate what you are doing. I particularly like the increased resolution of the subsystem.

It's so cool that we can determine so much about this system and others these days! Really exciting!

What a great presentation, Mike! There was so much coherent and crucial information presented here in this video. It's a powerful thing for me because I grew up relatively near the YellowStone region and have fond memories of visiting the Park when I was a kid (As well as visiting Craters Of The Moon, which is obviously closely related to the YellowStone caldera) . It's just cool that this park is and always will be special because of it's importance in the geological history and future of this earth. Thank you again Mike and I thank you USGS!
