I had an old Futaba T9CAP radio from 10 years ago that I never used sitting in the garage, so I decided to us it for my FPV airplane. My primary radio is a JR, but it doesn't have trainer functions for anything past channel 4, so I couldn't use the trainer cable from my goggles for head tracking. Futaba allows all eight channels to be used, so it was a natural fit.

I decided to modify the transmiter somewhat. This video shows what I did and why I did it.

  • I've got a similar situation. Got into RC planes many many years ago like you and bought a Futaba T9CAP radio also. Used may once or twice, and then it sat in my closet for 10 plus years. This helped me put new life into my transmitter and this is allowing me to get into FPV drones. I also bought the same transmitter and upgraded its firmware to use PPM.
  • Nice mod! I bet this could be done to my 8UAF. The 9CAP is a great radio, I have a 7CAP that's twelve years old and I still use it. The 7CAP and 9CAP are the easiest Futaba radios to program. I'm looking to add a 9CAP to my collection.

  • Thanks for the video.. I was searching forever for a video to see if i can use my old JR 9503 since i only saw 4 channels in the trainer mode but you answered my question in your description.. The funny thing is i sold my 9c a long time ago cuz i though i'd never use it.. Ah well, time for a new radio! Thanks again!!
  • Insha Allah I might be able to answer that for you. I am about to setup my for failsafe so when it goes out it switch to Return To Launch mode and I will be able to see the maximum distance. I am also pretty sure that the guys on FPV Lab and RCG have tested this system out. Bruce from rcmodelreview has tested the system too. Worth checking out

I've never found the ultimate range. It's further than my video TX, but that's not really saying much, to be honest. I do have a "D" series receiver, which has RSSI telemetry to the module (it beeps as it starts to get out of range), but I haven't used it yet.

Where did you purchase the Fatshark  to Futaba Trainer Port cable? Did you make the cable yourself ?
  • nice video. I just got one question about that Frsky module you are using. Did you manage to find out whats the range? I know it says 1.5 to 2.5 km on the hobbyking website. Did you ever manage to test it for that distance?
