Rachel Reeves holds news conference after cutting winter fuel payments

Published 2024-07-29
Rachel Reeves held a press conference after outlining Labour’s economic plan in a speech on Monday 29 July.

The chancellor warned of “difficult decisions” as she accused the previous government of leaving £21.9 billion of unfunded commitments that it had “covered up from the country”.

In a statement to Parliament, she set out “immediate action” to address the shortfall by £5.5 billion, with the rest of the gap to be addressed at a Budget on 30 October.

Stop giving France 500 million a year for doing sweet FA on the dinghy divers.
  • @Beefeatingman
Can't afford to pay winter fuel payments to the elderly but can afford to give billions to Ukraine. 😢. Time to get our priorities right.

Called it when they pushed maintaining the triple lock, give in one hand and take away from the other.....pensioners easy targets.
  • Does she think we believe her, cutting winter fuel payments is about as low as they can slither!!! How about stopping aid to Rich Countries where there is no need for it!
  • Take the money off the pensioners, they won’t fight back, easy money.
  • Well you made the wrong decision to not pay the pensioners the fuel support ……..but quite happily pay billions to fund illegal migrants and Billions in foreign aid….. the pensioners will remember this, they worked all their lives get one of the lowest state pensions in the developed world, and then get shafted by this Labour government
  • So they are going back to austerity, the very thing they said the Conservatives did wrong. the poorest will get the short straw again.
  • @Does-sk5vq
You can't afford the winter fuel? But You have all the money to give public servants an above-inflation pay rise while most people in the private sector struggle.

Why not put the immigrants in cold houses in Winter with no fuel and give pensioners five star hotel residence oh I forgot we pay homage to ECHR.

Didn't her appointed tax advisor Sir Edward Troup say he wanted to tax the "codgers". She obviously took the cruds advice. Despicable woman.
  • A very cruel cut to millions of pensioners who totally rely on this payment but because they're just above benefits levels probably because they have a little private pension or a little savings they've been left out to dry. A terrible decision by Reeves and it should be reversed immediately
  • @OliverHodkinson
2.6 trillion pounds in debt, who exactly do you think they owe that money too. Find the answer to that and you will be on your way to finding out who really runs our country.

1 Get rid of the house of lords. 2 stop sending money to Ukraine. 3 stop parting millions for migrant Hotels. 4cut the wasteful aid budget. 5 stop bleating on about the mess you were left with and get on with job
  • Bottemless pit of money though when it comes to foreign aid and hotel bills for Gimmiegrants 🤔🙄
  • So all you labour voters did nt see this one coming . Your vote has cost you 400 a year.
  • So I paid into a Pension System for 45 years and get a paltry pension which is barely enough to live and is even higher with increased food and utilities. So once a year I have for past ten years got £200 heating allowance which helps to get through cold winters. Now it's stops and with a threat that even State Pensions will be taxed and bus passes stopped. What the most painful is that someone who has never worked, lived benefits will be on Pension Credit. Not only will they get the heating allowance, they won't have to pay Council tax, get cost of living allowances, free dental, TV licence, glasses and lots more benefits. The difference in my pension and Pension Credit is £7 per week, but my monthly Council Tax is £172. So tell me how is this fair.
