Remakes of well-known movies like "Scarface" and "Ghostbusters" seem to show that studios are running out of original ideas. Variety deputy editor Jenelle Riley tells CBSN's Elaine Quijano about Hollywood's creative drought.

Hollywood ran out of ideas a long time ago when they started turning television shows into full length movies...there are a lot of good stories out there that will never be told because they aren't guaranteed block buster movie returns.....I quit Hollywood movies a long time ago, the world offers a full cinema of film that have absolutely nothing to do with Hollywood.  Hollywood is Dead.  Long Live Hollywood.

Yes that's why they remake all of these 80's movies

Hollywood: ight so we’ve run out of ideas Wattpad and other weird sites: I got you! Viewers: tf???

True, Hollywood has run out of originality and decided to ruin classics with remakes/reboots like Ghostbusters, Spiderman, Poltergeist, Scarface, etc.

It’s mainly because movie studios are run by corporations. Ultimately, they don’t get rewarded for being creative; they’re rewarded for making money. As a result, studios can churn out sequels and remakes that are financially “proven” to do well at the box office instead of investing in new stories and franchises. It’s sad.

They need to work with more authors to create newer ideas I reckon.

I'd like to think that studios are also trying to introduce younger viewers to these stories. I believe the generation gap keeps youngsters from "getting" older films. They have to be retold from their perspectives.

the fact that many may steal ideas from each other my money is a yes

This is even more relevant now than it was seven years ago. The reason all these remakes and reboots keep coming though is that people aren't giving money to the new stuff.
  • The irony is the script phase is the least expensive part of making a film. That's where you can get new material on the cheap!
  • 💯 agreed!!!!!!!!!!!! As an aspiring writer myself I would consider writing for online streaming video like Netflix
  • Also Hollywood Best writers have flocked to Television for more creative and visionary control. Just like in Music Business there been a lost appreciations for craftmanship and more priority to get the "product" out fast as possible to feed their bottom line. Hollywood could ticket sales up by seriously going after other demographics with more representation of people of color in quality movies. Hollywood is afraid of change. True Diversity mean a lot of execs who got their job on Nepotism or got a nice no show job producers are going to have to look elsewhere. Those positions will be filled with People of Color who broaden Hollywood perspective.
  • How about an animated rated pg-13 indigenous futurism movie in which we have an aztec version of star wars and game of thrones?
