Sabin storywise deserves to be S-Tier for one reason: his reunion with Celes in the World Of Ruin. Celes had lost all hope and even tried to kill herself, but in one last desperate attempt she goes out to the world to see if she can find someone, ANYONE. And who does she find? Fucking Sabin. Happy, courageous, loyal, optimistic, selfless Sabin. And what is he doing? What he always does, saving people. Doesn't matter the world has ended, you always try to help, you always try to do the right thing. Celes becomes OVERJOYED, her hope is not merely rekindled, it is FULLY RESTORED. She doesn't say she thinks the others are alive, she says she KNOWS they're alive, and she WILL find them. Her hope being restored like that would not had happened with any other character. Seeing the end of the world didn't change Sabin in the least is exactly what Celes needed to get her out of her funk. I cry every time I play the game and get to that part. Sabin has been my favorite Final Fantasy character forever because of it.

IIRC Setzer has the Fixed Dice weapon which while technically random was the first weapon I got a 9999 dmg with, and from memory they overall seemed "fixed" to higher median damage overall but that's just from memory and it's been a while now. I do however remember never switching them off of him once I got them and that was a big part of why. So I would probably weight him more a 'B' personally. I agree with Umaru's ranking though, in the words of the Bobs from Office Space: "he's useless." The subtle/low-volume themes playing for each character is some top-notch editing though IMO.

On Gau: “his abilities don’t really bring much to the table…” Stray Cat’s Cat Scratch ability, which happens pretty often with that rage, hits a guaranteed 4x physical damage. This alone makes him top tier throughout the first 50-60% of the game. Then, you get rages like Rafflesia (charm, a confuse ability that is largely unblockable) and Mu (snare, very useful early on) and flare star from Io, one of the better magic attacks in the game…Gau is loaded. Then beyond that, a Google search of Wind God Gau will show you just how much damage one character can reliably inflict on their own. About rafflesia - charm is about the most reliably safe method of dealing with Brachiosaurs in WoR when farming for Celestriads and Ribbons. Actually the problem you sometimes have when trying to steal the ribbon is the Brachy killing himself before you can actually steal it.

I think after the buffs to cyan from the steam port and pixel remaster made him a absolute monster, the moment they fixed bushido he went from a complicated character to a brain dead easy click tempest win the battle

Setzer can jump straight to S+ in the WoR. After recruiting him, take the airship and get Mog + Molulu's Charm in Narshe. Go straight to Kefka's Tower and using Mog you'll be able to get the Fixed Dice without having to worry about the difficult battles. Lastly get the Master's Scroll from the Ancient Castle. This will give Setzer 4 attacks at full damage with the Fixed Dice, insane damage for how early you get it and will carry you right through to endgame.

As a fellow father, there should be some sort of life achievement for Cyan to put the finishing blow on Kefka. Just started playing T-Edition FF6 again after many years away from the story and MAN, does Cyan's story hit me in the feels.

Umaro is a REALLY good option for the Colosseum - for the sole reason that his actions are always predictable (since the your actions is totally randomized) and he can hit HARD. He isn't perfect and there are some matchups where he will be at a disadvantage but he won't have to worry about him killing himself like Sabin (as I'm sure we all found out the hard way lol). Gau can be low-tier or high-tier depending on how you play. Most people give up on him because they try a few Rages and get annoyed... but if you're patient Gau can have access to some REALLY high-level magic early on - that he can activate at no MP cost. When you first get him, he can have access to level two offensive magic when most of your characters don't have magic at all! He starts with Templar, which gives him Fira... and if you beat a Cloud on the Phantom Train, you get Thundara. Cirpius from Mt. Koltz gives Gau Hastega, granting all party members with Haste. The Guard Leader when you rescue Terra from the caves with Locke and Mog gives you access to Wind Slash, a multi-target spell that will CARRY YOU for the entire World of Balance (it starts to fall behind in the World of Ruin). There are TONS more options for Gau but you gotta be patient to get them.

I agree with your reasoning, but Umaro was always my boy and the main reason I beat the mage tower back in the days. so yeah... F-tier character out of his niche, but S+ in my heart.

I don't understand why most people don't give Umaro a chance. He's fun to use if you give him a guanlet and master scroll.

Gau is WAY too low on your tier list. Have you even used Stray Cat, Mu or Rafflesia rages? He's gotta be S tier at LEAST.

You can add Mog to your party in the world of balance too! In fact you have to in order to get all of the dances.

Gau is S Tier. Equip 2 Impartisans and give him Genji Glove and Offering and use Stay Cat for 8X Catscratch FTW, lol.

Sabin should be S tier! ...he can suplex a train and can even suplex himself😂😂😂
