Despite the controversy of replacing Roth, the album was their first to top the Billboard 200. It was also Hagar's first #1, as stated by him on the Live Without a Net concert video. The album went to number one on April 26, 1986 and 2x Multi-Platinum on May 28, 1986.

A live video created during the tour for this album was released as Live Without a Net, which has since been released on DVD. The tour was a significant change from previous tours. Where Van Halen previously had years of material to work with, even on tour supporting the first album, Hagar was uncomfortable performing a large number of songs from the original lineup. Therefore, most of the band's back catalog was dropped from the set lists. Instead, the shows consisted of almost the entire 5150 album, a few Hagar solo hits ("I Can't Drive 55" and "There's Only One Way to Rock"), and a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll"; the band also played a humorous verse of Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" as part of "Best of Both Worlds." Of the Roth-era tracks, "You Really Got Me", "Panama", and "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love" were performed with regularity. Unlike Roth, Hagar was an established guitarist, allowing Eddie to play keyboards on some songs.

My 18 year old self was at this concert. My 56 year old self remembers it like it was yesterday. Good times.

this riff is hard enough to play, yet Eddie does it while jumping, spinning, not looking at the fretboard....greatness and joy constantly evidenced in his playing

Michael Anthony harmonizing with Sammy, amazing

What's really incredible is how Eddie creates such a full band sound when playing rhythm, essentially on his own. Hard to believe it's just that guitar, a bass, and drums. And so damn clean. Even live. That's his true gift, imo.

I’ve never seen Eddie happier than during this performance!! ❤️❤️❤️
  • Why was Eddie the best rock guitarist? When you watch this video, if you are a fan of rock, I challenge your jaw not to drop to the floor in awe. Great composer. Great performer. Great riffs. Great energy. Great connection with the rest of the band. Looks like he is in heaven playing that guitar. He was truly the guy that every guitar player wishes they could even be half of.

It's 2024 and there is still only one EVH. Rest in power, Eddie!

No fancy stage production or autotune. No background singers or dancers. Just four very talented gents having a damn good time!

Three times Eddie looked back to his brother Alex for timing and the "wink." This cannot be duplicated by anyone else.
  • My biggest regret in life is never seeing either incarnation of VH live. 😢

Man oh man.....doesn't get any better than this. My mom worked a lot so we had a sitter watching over my brothers and me. She gave me 5150 on cassette for Xmas. To say it was life changing would be a complete understatement. The power, virtuosity, vocal harmony, and just plain fun.....
