Actually, the guys in black are the Shinsengumi (Armed Police) - they're friends and allies. However, the protagonists are troublemakers and have minor conflicts in a funny way. Thank you for reacting to Gintama, I love it! Can't wait for the endings, they're cool too.

React to the endings, they are incredible too. A Gintama is one of the best shonen I have seen and my favorite. It's more comedy than action but Gintama's serious arcs are incredible. It also makes references to other anime like Dragon Ball, One piece or Bleach. If you want to see one of the parodies of dragon ball watch episode 119, it's very funny 20:37 if you see it, his meaning will surely make you cry, because in various arcs Gintama they use metaphors with the sun and the moon 24:59 that's not the version you should see, it was the fourth version. That version is from one of the arcs, one of the best arc in anime by the way Gintoki is the MC, he's one of the best MCs in anime. Gintama is very popular in Japan but very unknown abroad, people think it is just comedy but no, it is on the same level as One Piece or Naruto

Gintoki (with hair) is basically a war veteran and retired samurai with some PTSD who don't give a shit about anything, and he lives by doing all kinds of jobs as a mercerary with the other two who are basically like adopted children to him. The mix between Edo era and futuric technology is due to the story, Japan was invaded by aliens and so the samurais fought to defend it but they lost and so aliens and their tech ocupied earth and became part of common life. that's the basic of what you need to know ( the other two MCs are named Kagura and Shinpachi)

Just watch the anime its the best ever very underrated in the western world but loved by the whole of japan and they have the strongest women characters with amazing storylines

Gintama is 80% comedy and 20% awesome actions/fight scenes

I can understand you thinking the moon is relevant but actually sparing imagery, analogies or symbolism in a certain arc the moon isn't that relevant. HOWEVER the pillar as you suspected has HEAVY relevance to the story. The plot almost revolves around it.
