Out of this World - my first card effect

Paul Curry's Out of this World is one great trick. Dr. Harlan Tarbell taught me this effect when I was nine years old. He really had an excellent way to end the routine. I put this in a set of lecture notes called Wednesday Nights in 1993. I still see many magicians having trouble with the cleanup at the end of the effect. I hope this video will give you the perfect solution.

Great spot to do mentalism - amazing focus and wonderful atmosphere?
  • Allan, OOTW is my all-time favourite trick! It's the one that got me into magic when a magician blew my mind with it as a youngster! Thank you for demonstrating my favourite version of it :) Young interviewer I do hope this opportunity with Allan encourages you to learn some magic history - Tarbell is a HUGE name in the world of magic and Out of This World is perhaps THE most famous trick (apart from Any Card at Any Number). I'm amazed that you haven't heard of them but hopefully you're curious now. But most of all please put your cards down when someone is talking to you and especially resist the temptation to try to show off your flourishes when someone else (especially a much-revered expert like Mr Ackerman) is performing - it's not cool. If the deck had been gimmicked in any way your 'fancy' shuffling would have exposed another magician's method. Next time just be the best kind of spectator that YOU would like to encounter.
  • Great. liked a lot the subtle justification for reversing the colours, and also the misdirection/ delayed revelation at the end.

Amazing story…a fantastic presentation. I studied your advanced card control #3 from VHS days. One of my favorites magic tapes…thank you :)
  • I just love it.. this simple classic handling. I like how you pick the cards the first half.. seems totally fair. Doesn't require a special setup.. very nice.. pretty dang magical :) I am gonna try this on my BF just like first before trying other variations :)
  • Haven't seen/heard some of the subtleties that you used in this video. Great additions, thank you for sharing

Who’s the dude interviewing you? He’s a pain in the ass flicking his cards arrogantly while you are talking. He goes to deal the cards face up. He must have been expecting the bets version of Out Of This World ever.
  • what i wouldnt give to spend some time with an old time magic heavyweight like mr Ackerman !!! if you ever come to England please stop by for tea sir .. wonderful handling by the way ,id expert nothing less of course . stay safe Allan
  • @doomo
Love Allen but interviewer dude STOP doing flourishes when the subject is speaking.
  • Thank you for this wonderful piece of magic Mr Ackerman! I have performed a version of mine of Out of this world for years, I've been loving it and I thought I would never change for another one... but you almost made me change my mind! (I'm sorry if I made mistakes in this comment, I'm not a native English speaker).
  • Dear Alan. Please make a video with ackerman opener. Thanks
  • I love your handling and especially the ending the routine. Michael Ammar has a similar ending. I didn't know that it came from Dr. Tarbell. I have been performing OOTW since 1980 and was slightly uncomfortable with Curry's ending. I adopted Ammar's handling a few years ago and don't regret it. Who is that interviewer who tries to show his skill with a pack of cards while you are speaking? As far as I am concerned, he only showed is ignorance and unpoliteness.
  • Is the way you are performing it now how you wrote it up in Wednesday Night lecture notes? i.e. impromptu like this with a shuffled deck and first half dealt out by performer? I think it looks totally fair because the spexctator is calling out which piles to put it in each time.
  • Allan, is yoru Wednesday Night lecture notes going ot be in your new book? I really would love to read the Wednesday Night lecture notes.
  • It is more like a mentalist magic for me.. "out of this world" .Would u please reveal the secret sir? Or some kind like a tutorial..
