Mendelssohn’s “Reformation” Charles Münch 1949 NY Philharmonic

Published 2024-07-17
Charles Münch conducts the NY Philharmonic’s January 9th, 1949 performance of Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 in D major/D minor, Op. 107, aka Reformation.

This was recorded off the radio by Reynolds Marchant. Local station WCCO played the Philharmonic's CBS broadcast. I’m pretty sure this is the only recording available of Munch conducting Reformation with the NY Philharmonic - everything else I found was with the Boston Symphony.

There was a weird audio glitch with a loud tone inserted around 17:40. I could not remove it because the music was happening at the same time. I reduced the volume and tried to fade around it but that’s about all I could do. Thankfully it was brief.
