The second biggest beginner mistake I see in Photography is that people spend too much time thinking about the subject in the photo, and not the other parts of the image and composition. That's what this video is about. Well, that and cake...

If you would like a print of any photo that appears in one of my videos, please email [email protected] with a screenshot of the image you would like, and the size you would like (A4 = £25 or A3 = £40). These prints are signed but not numbered. Thanks for your support :)

Thank you :)

  • "A good photo is about something, not just of something." Good thought, thank you.

Emily seems like a very patient person - and thanks for the helpful video.
  • @lensmanonline
Great point James the idea of a photo being about something, rather of just being of something is some i've being trying to work to, rather than just snapping away i spent more time looking around me.
  • @meredithpottery
I love your channel! You make me laugh and feel less pressured to always be worrying that I am not getting the perfect photo. After watching you, I remember that photography can be fun instead of a chore. Thanks for that and for all you do. Enjoy Scotland.
  • @skiffens
I agree with your overall point, and I like the wider pictures more. Those blurry rocks in the foreground don't really work for me though.
  • @drutgat2
Thanks for this, and sorry to hear about the ticks. When I was visiting my relatives farm (in Cornwall) some years ago, a tick became embeded in my leg, and I was ill, on and off, for a year. Nothing really negative - intense fatigue at times, and a few other things. So, I hope that you do not suffer any ill effects.

Great Tips, thanks James! I am trying to learn to be a better portrait photographer, as I am pretty crap at it. Each video really gives me more confidence in my work. Thanks again!

Sheep police have found u, James 😂😂 Thank you for the advices in this!
  • Great video James, point well made I think. Changing an image from of something to about something, can be quite a simple thing and makes such a difference, see you in Scotland, Del.

maybe not the best idea to use your wife as the subject of the bad example photo. that's what my ex told me once.
  • @RobertFGardner
Thanks again for great content. Ideas I can actually use!
  • I have been watching your work for three years, thank for the information. I've also learned a lot.
  • @ChrisConner1
This is my favorite video of yours (binge watching today.) Pictures of vs pictures about is easy to remember. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
  • I just found your channel about a week ago, and I have to say - I love your style of video production (as well as your photography, of course). But you don’t just make a video talking about a photography subject. You make an entertaining video about a photography subject that also lets us get to know you through your sense of humor, too. Anyway - I’m very much a novice photographer (from a skill point of view) even though I’ve been taking photos since I took a summer class at college back in like…2005, or something. Im trying to get back into it and actually learn why my images are terrible. Lol. Thanks for the videos, your time, and your insight!

Love your videos James, your perspective is refreshing. Moonpie
