Rick Steves' Europe © 2023 | Around 1400, Europe rediscovered the aesthetics of ancient Greece and Rome. This rebirth of classical culture showed itself in the statues, paintings, and architecture of Florence, then spread to Spain, Holland, Germany, and beyond. The Renaissance—from art-loving popes to Leonardo’s Mona Lisa and Michelangelo’s David—celebrated humanism and revolutionized how we think about our world.  Find names and locations for works of art listed in the script at www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/video/tv-show… #ricksteves #rickstevesart #arthistory

Thank you for keeping the history of art alive and vibrant! My instructor on art history in the late 1060s, Rupert Kilgore. Brought it to life for me! He connected the artists, the times, the influences, society, technology. All of it contributed to the amazing result. When I finally got to see the sculpture of David, La Pieta, the Vatican, the art of Florence, in spite of my knowledge, my jaw dropped. It is all more awesome than we can convey with words. Thank you.
