Attack of the Clones is way better than you think. Sure, the second Star Wars prequel is filled with clunky dialogue, stiff acting, and cartoony CGI--but underneath all of that, it is a personal story told by an auteur that warns us of the rise of a dictatorship.

There’s a point I never hear anyone make, which is that Anakin is supposed to be a teenage boy. Teenage boys are perfectly capable of all the wildly awkward dialogue he gives to Padme. Especially when they’re trying to flirt. None of it stands out to me as unrealistic.

The fact this movie gave us Clone Wars, one of the greatest cartoon series and SW content, makes the movie even better for me.

Honestly, this was my guilty pleasure for years. It was such great escapism. So many of the shots look like landscape paintings from a Star Wars art book.

:_Doug:AOTC also has the single best shot in all of the Prequels: the Clones shooting and marching into the dust cloud on the desert plains of Geonosis.

I have been an Ep. II apologist since the day it premiered and I feel so very seen right now. Yoda's saber draw with the Force is one of my all-time favorite Star Wars moments.

A little while ago I rewatch AotC after years a with fresh eyes noticed something big. Anakin was 19, a teenager, and givin his first solo responsibility. That was acting as body guard to his celebrity crush. When factoring his stunting of emotional growth by the Jedi Code, being socially isolated even within the Jedi Order, and the fact he was a TEENAGER his actions made much more sense, even the cringy dialog.

"I don't like sand" literally translates as "I love water", i.e. "I love you". Padme is always associated with water (comes from a water planet, wears blue etc.), Anakin is associated with fire. When he later says to Palpatine that he can't live without her, he means it. Without her, he burns in an inferno, which we literally can see as well. The dialogue is not clunky, it's a symbolism.

I've always really liked it because it had a huge sense of adventure. To me, these are the kind of stories that Anakin would have told young Luke and Leia had he not turned. "Kids, let me tell you about the time your mom and I were nearly killed in a battle droid factory!"

The whole prequel trilogy was misunderstood on release and remains terribly underrated. The world building is unparalleled and the actors are on point. Nice vid 👍
  • It's one of my favorites. Loved the point about it feeling like a stageplay, which it really does. I know the dialogue is a bit weird at times but I do justify it as Anakin was raised to be a Jedi, so of course he wouldn't know how to flirt with someone he wants to be with. That, and that he likely thought of how he'd do it for those 10 years, only to actually be spooked when he's there, like nearly anyone.

The Tragedy Of The Prequel Series is how great the overall story is and how weak the execution is. In 1977 we speculated on the backstory of the Clone Wars and in many ways the story was better than I thought: The Emperor creates two factions that he controls and sends them to war with each other and uses the chaos to destroy that Jedi. Utter genius George. As much as people don't like EP1 to me the weakest spot was EP2, which if done right could have been some amazing movie like The Godfather movie with plots inside of plots. Instead, it was a mess that really muddied the larger story. 1) the love story was poorly executed and 2) the larger political story was convoluted. The speeder chase at the start was the first time I remember feeling bored in a Star Wars movie. The only time people cheered when I saw it was during the Yoda fighting scene The great side of course is that it set up the Clone Wars show and all the other content from that era which was really good. I watch a fan edit sometimes that makes the love story better and cuts out some of the bad parts, but still am disapointed.

I never noticed that the Death Star was just in the background of one of those scenes, I only ever noticed it when Dooku was holding the holographic projection in his hand at the end of the film.

Thank you for this. This has long been my second favorite of the saga films—after Empire–for a lot of the reasons you outlined here. It is literally packed with goodies and is possibly the most Pulp/serial inspired of the entire series. There is almost too much to love about this movie.
  • The best scene in the movie is when the bearded guy asks Annie, "What do you think master Jedi?" and before he can answer, Padme cuts in to say, "Oh Annie's not a Jedi, he's just a padawan learner". Seriously, she kicked Annie in the nuts so hard there, that mine actually hurt when I watch that scene, lol.
  • The parallels you point out in this video are mind-bogglingly epic! Like, how I have not noticed them before? So good! Thanks for hitting yet ANOTHER video out of the park! Well done!

Yes! All the Clone Wars moments of a Anakin's brutality, they showed that he was already comfortable with being brutal when necessary. I love these movies and shows

I really enjoy Episode II. I saw it 3 times in the theater. I had a lot of fun talking with fellow fanatics opening day. I bought it on DVD. When they put the whole series on Google Play, I bought it again. I never thought the title "Attack of the Clones" was campy.
  • This was my favorite movie growing up, seeing this in theatre at seven years old was insane. People always hupe up the arena battle, but to me the craziest scenes were the full scale war on Geonosis that happens right after.
