Videogames are the perfect medium for a jump scare, because you’re always putting your face near things, or looking through things, and frankly either of those are asking for trouble. With that in mind, we present seven of the most effective jump scares we’ve experienced in recent gaming memory. Enjoy, and subscribe for more videos like this from Outside Xbox!

  • If the book monster isn't on here I'll have no choice but to assume that Andy suppressed that memory into his trauma box, never to be opened again

The fact that Outlast isn't on here is lunacy. It's been 11 years and I still haven't picked the game back up from the corner I threw it in after that giant man grabbed me while I was shimmying through that gap and threw me through a window. The shimmy is the new loading screen, it's meant to be a sacred and safe space!

Honourable mention to the jumpscare in Bioshock Infinite, the Boy Of Silence in the mental hospital. I had to put my controller down for a good ten minutes to get my heart rate back down to safe levels.
  • @ripopol
when I saw the thumbnail i got REALLY excited to see a mention of "teleporting Watson" from that Holmes VS Arsene Lupin game. wrong Steam-age bowlerhat.
  • "And a brutal mauling to boot .... and to face, body, the whole zone" 😂
  • Whenever I play a game that has a jumpscare the secondtime: this time I'm ready jumpscare gets me again
  • @dasetman
Bioshock 1 got me when that dude appears behind you when you pick something from a table or something
  • Arkham Knight also has ANOTHER jumpscare like Man-Bat's. When you're still plagued by ghost-Joker in your head (i.e. before you finish the main story), there's a chance for joker to pop up from behind a ledge you grappled to and scream-laugh in your face. He giggles afterward that Batman is "scared of his own reflection"

I have to say, YouTube: startling me by cutting in with an ad at the exact moment one of these jumpscares was foretold to happen? Well played.
  • Andy screaming at a jumpscare is scarier to me than most jumpscares.
  • The person who wrote the note in RE Village was likely Heisenberg, the picture is of one of his soldiers (which you haven't seen yet). He wants to take Miranda down, but can't be seen helping Ethan, so he likely left the hint there for him to find.
  • The one-way mirror licker attack in the original RE2 got me. Every. Single. Time.
  • The first time I encountered a Re:Dead in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I'm just running along, then there's a shrill scream and I'm suddenly trapped in place while a zombie-like creature slowly shuffles towards me, presumably to feed on my brains. Not fun.
  • To me the most effective jump scare will always be the T-Rex in original Tomb Raider. Enemies of that size are a dime a dozen today but back then they just weren't a thing. Another good one is in Bioshock when you pick up the Speedy Hacker in Painless Dental. If you played it you know.
  • @plinkitee
How about whenever Jimmy finds you in "At Dead of Night"? You're risking your head every time you turn a corner.
  • The bathtub in Eternal Darkness (a criminally underrated game) is a jumpscare I still think about to this day...
  • I still remember the mannequin scene from "Silent Hill 3." You go into a room with a mannequin inside, then cross over into the next room, where you hear a horrifying scream and then the sound of something collapsing. When you return to the previous room, the mannequin is lying on the floor, broken and covered in blood. Absolutely terrifying.
  • I was surprised at how often I got jump scared by the zombies in RE2 remake. No matter how much I was sure I'd cleared out a room or double checked the corners, there was always one that managed to stir and scare the crap out of me
