Is Christianity Useful to the West?

Publicado 2024-05-27
Friends, is Christianity a useful religion to the West? Atheist Richard Dawkins recently claimed that, while still an atheist, he considers himself a “cultural Christian” because of Christianity’s utility in supporting Western cultural and political values, which he laments are under attack. Former atheist Ayaan Hirsi Ali also recently shared that she became a Christian upon realizing that Christianity is necessary to preserve Western political norms.

There are some complex and even troubling underlying questions about making the connection between Christianity and utility, especially as it relates to contemporary “Western values.” How is the utility defined and in response to what specific societal goals? Is Christianity’s utility limited to the West alone? Aren’t there some “Western values” that are antithetical to Christianity?

A listener asks how to respond to the common criticism from atheists that Christians only believe in God because they are scared of death.

In one of the last pictures I have of me and my Grandma (a strict Catholic), I'm wearing a Dawkins "For Reason and Science" T-Shirt. I remember her asking me what it meant, and in my unrestrained pride, telling her about the atheist movement. She said nothing, but her face was shocked. Me and my family are back to the Church and I pray for her to see us.

Ayan Hirsi Ali didnt just convert because of the usefulness of Christianity. She lately described a true conversion on the Trigernometry podcast. It was a beautiful and humble testimony. ❤️
  • Thank you Bishop. I just recently got confirmed into the Catholic Church and I thank God for this gift. God bless you and I love the videos.
  • I’ve listened to this show for years as a podcast. I now look forward to watching this face to face discussion every week on YouTube. Sometimes I even watch it twice. It reminds me of the old Firing Line show from years ago. Great show!

Dawkin’s “cultural Christianity” is essentially saying “I enjoy eating the cake, but I refuse to believe there is a baker”

Thank you Bishop Barron for sharing the farm visit experience. It brought back my childhood memories of growing up on a farm without running water or electricity where I was by nature close to God. I feel sad that our young generation being addicted to electronics has lost that sense of closeness to God and resulted in what I believe is the loss of Christian values founded by the West particularly in early in the 15th century with missionaries being to Asia to convert that whole continent. We must restore America back to its founding ideals of God, family, and country. Harrison Butker's commencement speech should have been a welcoming one but instead of a storm of controversy.

As a former atheist, too many Christians believe in the revelation of belief and then behavior follows. Opposite is often true. You develop the habits because you know it’s for the better. The reasoning follows after the behavior.

You Bishop Barron are a phenomenal “Tennis” player. Thank you so much! You make our faith so much easier to understand!
  • @julietokoth
Your reference to likening the strategy of evangelisation to playing tennis is ingenious. Always love listening to your conversations, which is very enlightening.

A very interesting discussion on this was posted recently on Pints with Aquinas- an interview with John Daniel Davidson on the “Neo-Paganism” of the United States and the Western world.
