These are the modifications that I did to a basic 5 x 8 foot Utility trailer I bought at the home center. I got most of these ideas/information from others, so I hope this helps someone else.
-deck
-jack
-gear box
-tie downs
-bearings
-spare tire

Great video! I have the exact trailer from Lowe’s and wanted to do plywood but didn’t know where to start. Also the box on the tongue I wanted to do but had no idea also where to start. Thanks for the ideas!!!
  • Pretty good ideas. Few things I didn't think of. Nice bid on the fittings for the wheels...I wouldn't have done that. Randall would have cause he is so much better, smarter and experienced than I am. Thanks for the input. I'm off to wish I was as good as everyone else who has done, owned and worked with everything I never have. Good look on this one John...Thanks

I bought one of these recently, hauled a motorcycle 300 miles, it was shaking so bad I thought a hook would pop loose any moment... Sure enough the last the quarter mile of driving (which is down a pot holed dirt road) I hit a big bump and watched in the rear view mirror as my bike tipped over. Luckily I was going like 2 mph and didn't damage anything (its a dirt bike it falls all the time lol). Definitely adding a deck to the trailer cause that was a terrifying drive home lol. I could see cars staying back from my trailer, probably out of fear lol.
  • Had to rewire mine already after a month of owning it. I got mine on sale at lowes. Mine holds up. We already hauled motorcycles. A atv and a upright piano with it. Pulls great
  • Great simple video. Have the same exact trailer and going t make these modifications. Thanks.

Awesome video man. Just got the exact same trailer today! Gonna get the 1×6×8 planks instead for the flooring. Other than that, your ideas are solid! Gonna use mine for light duty hauling, but for the money, this trailer was a steal! Doing these simple mods saves a lot of $$$! Thanks!

I also changed the rear lights to LED's; kept having incandescent bulbs go bad.

I've wanted to have a spare tire on the trailer but didn't want to spend the money on one. Your Ubolt idea is genius. I'm going to steal it lol. I just put my 5x8 Carry-on trailer into my workshop so I can remove the 2x lumber I used for the floor (as you know the mesh sucks) and I'll replace with enameled plywood (lighter). I'll fab up some removable sides with 2x or plywood. I'll also weld on tongue supports since its not rigid enough.

I am buying one of these from Trailers Plus in Las Vegas. I think it will be a great size trailer.
