NUMBERS STATIONS. Not a relic of the past. Intelligence agencies use shortwave to communicate with spies, agents and assets in the field. Right now. Today. Let's listen to a few and learn how to tune in from home -- for free.

Since World War One, numbers stations have been transmitting coded messages to spies around the world using shortwave radio. And they're still transmitting right now. We're going to listen to a few in this episode.

These transmissions sound strange to casual listeners. But to the right set of ears, they contain information that could change the course of history. In fact, numbers stations have changed the course of history.

Countless numbers stations are on the air right now -- for what purpose, few really know. And the people that do know? They aren't talking. They're essentially pirate stations -- operating illegally. But, nobody shuts them down. And no government acknowledges they even exist.

Let's find out why.

Currently underappreciated. Would buy stocks in this channel.

This is what a big channel looks like in the beginning. Remember you were here.

When I was a kid in the early 1980s my dad who was a "ham radio operator" since the 1960s got me a short wave radio .I used it all the time and late at night I would always hear a woman say random five numbers in Spanish for hours at a time. My dad told me these were Cuban spies talking to each other and the reason they only did this at night is because during the night the ionisphere is closer to the Earth and short wave radio signals can bounce off of it easier to reach across the horizon. I never heard anyone talk abotu this until I saw this video on youtube 40 years later

When I was a kid my family had a big boombox that had 2 shortwave bands along with am fm. I used to hear those stations and they really freaked me out. I also used to hear airplane chatter through it. We still have it, and it works. Crazy stuff.
  • Hecklefish works because he's our inner voice. When you say something like 'they told him they were from the government and they were there to help' hecklefish is the 'yeah right' gut reaction. And it allows for friendly banter. You don't need someone else to explain stuff, you're great at that yourself!

In UK 1978 my brother & I were given walky talkies for Xmas. We came across a very similar broadcast while flicking through channels. Sometimes, we'd get truckers or police, but, when we came across this, the weird music, bleeps, numbers, letters..? We told parents but, it had stopped, it was intermittent. Finally, it makes sense. Gonna phone my bro & tell him!

What a strange world we live in. Thanks for helping us explore it, AJ. You too, Hecklefish.

Only recently discovered this amazing channel. I can't get enough! Not one video is anything less than professional, thought-provoking and fascinating. Please keep them coming, AJ! (Hecklefish - you rock)
  • @BeExcellent1
I wish the algorithm blessed me with this earlier, loving the content so much that I'm taking notes and binge watching it all. Looking forward to fiddling with the online radio, please never stop making content!

Number stations, this took me back to when I was a kid, my dad got me interested in this strange voice on the radio, he himself was ex military and coming across this episode has really brought back some wonderful memories of me and my dad it’s a shame he’s passed as I now have questions. Great show
  • Every once in a while you come across a great channel and this is by far the best I’ve ever came across. It’s factual, funny and you do it so well the balance is perfect my friend 😊
  • This channel has easily become one of my favorites. From the topics you cover to the way you cover it. And I love Hecklefish ❤
  • @electron3114
When I found this channel, it was on under 100 subs, and now you have grown so fast to 2,300 subs but you deserve 10 million. The quality is so amazing
  • @petrosbroumas2647
THE NUMBERS, MASON?? WHAT DO THEY MEAN?? Great content even all this while ago, best channel I found this year👌
  • @Dman3827
What the heck?! I've picked up some strange things on AM radio before. Very bizarre. I'm still blown away by the video about the secret caves in the grand canyon. Great channel! These stations seem like something from an X-files episode.
  • Those 5 character words that are encoded as you showed are not plain text, like names. They are usually nouns and verbs that is another level of encryption. For example, "Johnny has a red wagon", "the chair is against the wall", "the fire is out", "Jane baked a pie". Translation: Get the item from the drop spot 7, Contact agent B, Follow Plan A4, Destroy per method 5. Which is yet another level of encrption for: Pick up an item near the old soda can on that typical spot on the side of the road, give it to "darkstar", read what he gives you on the toilet at Dave's bar, tear it up after reading and flush it 3 times. Stuff like that. Handler agents can be given the same message which means totally different things to each agent. Johnny has a red wagon can mean pick up an item to one agent, or get out of town now to another. Since it is a broadcast, you have no context for the message as it is decoded.

Hi from England. This is absolute gold. Every episode, even if it's about something we think we're clued up on, has such great content and it's delivered in such a friendly way. I love that there's no forced opinion; we're invited to imagine for ourselves. I hope for so much more content, keep it up :-)
  • @picklecage5488
This channel has reach one of my favorites fast, just found it a few days ago and im almost through all the episodes! Awesome content! 😊❤
  • @tomb70
"The Russian woodpecker" was actually a massive OTH radar called Duga. It was in Prypiat and was deactivated due to the Chernobyl meltdown. It got its name from a distinct clicking noise it caused on ALL radio bands. It's cool stuff.
