SACN vitamin D and health report

www.gov.uk/government/publications/sacn-vitamin-d-…

A reference nutrient intake (RNI) of 10 micrograms (400 units) of vitamin D per day, throughout the year, for everyone in the general population aged 4 years and older

The RNI and safe intakes were developed to ensure that the majority of the UK population has enough vitamin D to protect musculoskeletal health, all year round.

SACN did not take account of sunlight exposure in making recommendations because of the number and complexity of factors that affect skin synthesis of vitamin D.

Vitamin D deficiency is very common in all age groups

Few foods contain vitamin D

Task Force recommended supplementation, depending on age and clinical circumstances

Measurement of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level, in patients at risk for deficiency

Treatment with supplement recommended for deficient patients

Immunologic Effects of Vitamin D on Human Health and Disease

Calcium and phosphate metabolism, bones

1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, active form of vitamin D

Immunomodulatory hormone

Innate and adaptive immune systems

Vitamin D receptor and enzymes in;

Lymphocytes
NKs
T lymphocytes
B lymphocytes
Monocytes
Macrophages
Dendritic cells

Vascular endothelial membrane stability

Association with low blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D

Several immune-related diseases and disorders

Psoriasis,

Type 1 diabetes

Multiple sclerosis

Rheumatoid arthritis

Tuberculosis

Sepsis

Respiratory infection

COVID-19

Optimal Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D

It is advisable to increase vitamin D intake and have sensible sunlight exposure

Maintain serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D at least,

30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L)

and preferably

40–60 ng/mL (100–150 nmol/L)

Recommended dosage for vitamin D intake in individuals who are at risk for vitamin D
Deficiency (1,000 iu = 25 mcg)

Age, years Daily requirement Upper limit
Years Requirement

0 – 1 400 – 1,000 2,000
1 – 18 600 – 1,000 4,000
18 + 1500- 2000 10,000
Obese 4,000 – 6000 10,000

For deficiency 0 – 1 year

2000 IU/day or 50,000 IU/week

of vitamin D2 or D3 for at least 6 weeks

to achieve serum 25(OH)D more than 30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L)

maintenance therapy of 400–1000 IU/d

For deficiency 1 – 18 years

2000 IU/day or 50,000 IU/week of vitamin D2 or D3 for at least 6 weeks

to achieve serum 25(OH)D more than 30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L)

maintenance therapy of 600–1000 IU/d

For deficiency after 18 years

6000 IU/day or 50,000 IU/week

of vitamin D2 or D3 for 8 weeks

to achieve serum 25(OH)D more than 30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L)

maintenance therapy of 1500 –2000 IU/d

Obese and malabsorptive patients

Dosage should be increased by 2–3 times

Respiratory Viral Infection and COVID-19

Outbreak of influenza infection is periodic and usually occurs during the wintertime at higher latitudes

but is sporadic throughout the year in the tropical area

Association between low level of serum 25(OH)D and
incidence and severity of respiratory tract infection in children and adults

A recent meta-analysis of 25 RCTs showed that supplementation of vitamin D2 or D3 can protect against the development of acute respiratory tract infection compared with placebo

COVID

Rate of symptomatic infection, morbidity and mortality observed

African American

Obesity

Worldwide on average approximately 40% of children and adults have circulating levels of 25(OH)D less than 20 ng/mL (50 nmol/L)

It is therefore reasonable to institute as a standard of care to give at least one single dose of 50,000 of vitamin D to all COVID-19 patients as soon as possible after being hospitalized

Thanks Dr. Campbell I was following your lecture since the start of this pandemic. I am a pharmacist working in South Africa and I have been taking vitamin D3 2000iu daily. I tested positive for covid19 15 days ago. Never showed extreme signs and symptoms. Only losses of smell and test for couple of days. No cough, headache, fever, shortness of breath and so on. So I recommend for people to take it. I thank you for endeavors in this matter.

There's no money in educating people about maintaining their health, but there's big money in treating people with drugs when they get sick.
  • I am black and obese. Fortunately for me, my vitamin D level is at 68 ng/ml. I’ve been taking 20,000 IUs each day.
  • i like to stay when i have time, but really like the rapid 'bottom line', so thanks again doctor

There is a reason why cod liver oil was given to kids years ago.

i have a disabled child so we see a lot of specialists, one of these specialists is a bone doctor and he gave my child vitimin D to take daily, what i found interesting is what he said about the upturn of children he see's now, all of whom are developing rickets because of the lack of playing outside, choosing to sit in front of the telly or game systems, and what have you.. The lack of Vit D, Seems to be a hidden problem that nobody really speaks about.

Hello John. I would feel like a voice crying out in the wilderness if it weren’t for you. I’ve been following you since the very beginning— but rarely comment on YouTube. But I am so grateful. I’m a science educator at the American museum of natural history and you just gave the descriptions I give of the skin pigments in the Hall of Human Origins. I was low on vitamin D and my beloved primary care doctor recommended it to me years ago. Someday when this is all over if you ever head to New York City you can count on me for a welcome to my beloved museum. Thank you again John. I’ve been so assisted by you thru this in New York City. Hooray for Northern England! Arlene Katz

This information will save lives - let’s hope all Government Health departments read and implement these guidelines, it makes so much sense! Thank you as always Dr. John, I very much appreciate your dedication and your sacrifice from your allotment.

I started taking vitamin D based on Dr Campbells COVID recommendation --- I wanted to be my best just in case. I was ASTOUNDED at how much better I felt after taking vitamin D for about three weeks! I must have been sooooooo deficient. I feel my best when I take 4000 ius a day --- I think that is a lot, but I feel really good on that dose. I think I have been deficient all my life. Thank you Dr. Campbell!
  • Your daily lesson are so relaxing and just a treat for the brain...
  • Thank you for stay with us through all of this you have kept me informed since the start and I appreciate and respect you for all you have done for all of us.
  • @suncitygal
When our good doctor starts out with you're welcome to stay after bottom line I actually perk up and get ready to receive some excellent education .

This is the level of madness we've now reached in the UK. Official bodies wont give impartial, fact-based advice that could save lives just in case they cause offence. Unbelievable.

"A low level of vitamin D in blood plasma appears to be an independent risk factor for Covid-19 infection and hospitalization, say scientists from Israeli HMO Leumit Health Services and the Azrieli Faculty of Medicine of Bar-Ilan University"
  • @paulbork7647
Thanks, again, John. You were quite welcome, again, in my home, today. Well done. You may never have a good appreciation how many people you have helped avoid disease, more severe disease, severe complications, severe sequela and death, with your efforts today.

You are hanging on like a trerrier 😊 Thank you from my heart ❤️
  • @moonspath1598
I was tested 10yrs ago with low vit D and put my family on vit D when you advocated it. Thank you!
  • @4sstg
Thanks to you, many of us are now taking vit. D. daily. Even though its summer in the northern hemisphere its too hot to be outside, so I still take it daily. I notice I feel better emotionally, as well as physically. I think it has a positive influence on seratonin, and other bio- chemicals that regulate mental health.

I love the way Dr. Campbell break things down for the normal layman to understand.
