Today it was the Green Party's turn to launch its manifesto, with co-leaders Carla Denyer and Adrian Ramsay pledging to "mend broken Britain". (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)

It features some very expensive pledges, like spending an extra 50 billion pounds a year on health and social care by 2030. They want to scrap tuition fees and the two-child limit for child benefit, create 150 thousand new social homes every year and introduce rent controls.

Their Green Economic Transition plan includes 29 billion pounds to insulate homes. They would stop all new fossil fuel projects and take water companies, railways and the big five energy firms into public ownership.

They would pay for all this with a carbon tax on fossil fuels, an eight percent National Insurance rate on income over the Upper Earnings limit, and a one percent wealth tax for assets over ten million pounds and two percent for more than a billion pounds.

  • This reporting is incredibly biased. You’ve not engaged with the detail of the manifesto and instead have just made baseless claims that the numbers don’t add up. Do the maths and present the numbers to your audience, don’t just sit there laughing like a mug.
  • If the U.K. can spend £60 billion on so called defences which by the way all goes to to being decommissioned after a certain period , why don’t there money to look after the health of the citizens who are working collectively to bring in £3Trillion each year ?
  • If you don't invest in your people and infrastructure then you won't increase productivity.
  • They also want to up the minimum wage to £15 ph. This is the best manifesto by far.
  • What, they launched their manifesto and didn't head to a fun fair straight after?! Not even a go on the swings? They're not taking this seriously! 😉
  • @AtheistEve
We have more than 350,000 long term empty properties in the UK. And more than 8 million under-occupied.
  • Biased reporting much? Vote Green for Proportional Representation. Wholesale Systemic Change is surely the best way forward now.
  • I'm going to support these guys with some MPs they may be able to pull Labour to the left a little.
  • @fearghal10
Even if their manifesto isnt properly costed it doesn't really matter - at present, the idea is to basically present everything labour should ve doing but isnt, then try pressure them to steal a few policies or risk loosing votes. They're not making a manifesto for actually governing
  • Not very much coverage for a whole manifesto 😢 What else is in it?
  • One of the only manifesto that is actually planning on making real changes and also looking at tackling wealth inequality.
  • @kalim3238
Atleast their honest and open and we need an honest government. Go greens 💚
  • I would actually trust the tories and labour before these eco-loons.
  • @greenbucky
The only party who mention wealth taxes, the most important thing in society.
  • May as well refer to these as the Monster raving loony Communist wing
  • To make a real dent in the environmental damage that has been done to the UK (let alone the Planet) would require sacrifices the likes of which no one in the country will support, and which the Greens avoid discussion of like the plague. It would also require some quite major fundamental changes to the world of work, industry and commerce that businesses blanche at the implications. And that is just the UK. It cannot all be done in isolation anyway, because it is not merely a local/national issue, it's a regional/continental issue and thus a Globally International one. And I cannot see the Developed World, the 'First' (as it used to be called) World doing what would be required, and the Developing World the 'Second/third' World "levelling up" under the types of conditions that would need to be set in order to combat/deal with the environment/climate damage that needs to be done.

What about immigration? Outside offenders? Knives? Living costs....
  • The world is now in excellent shape! 20% greener than it was in 2000! A land area, equal to the size of continental USA is now greener! And, just what did happen to that coming Ice Age? Up until the mid-1970’s scientists were warning us of a new Ice Age that was a coming and they had predicted that it would soon be the end of humanity. Since the early 1940’s the world’s temperature had been dropping. The UK winter of 1963 was the coldest since the 14th century. And I can testify to that. I was there! I remember it very well! And it was effing cold, believe me! It snowed on Christmas Day 1962 and then some more-so, and then some more-so, and then those pesky frozen-solid snow-drifts didn’t thaw out until well into spring. Going out to a New Years Eave Party I can still clearly remember seeing hundreds of dead birds lying on the ground. They had frozen to death. And it wasn’t just the UK that was frozen over like a pop-sicle! It was the entire Northern Hemisphere. There was thick snow everywhere even in places like Barcelona and Athens! And then there were all those gloomy popular science books and all those even gloomier science fiction books, all having covers showing ice covered cities. The tops of Big Ben and the Empire State Building were seen poking out through the ice-caps and polar bears were seen roaming the desolate and now ice-cap covered fields of Surrey. They were forecasting all this happening in, in the back then future year of 1976. And in the summer of 1976, lo and behold, there was actually snow in June, and a couple of Test Matches had to be cancelled. “Yikes it’s actually happening!” However, a week later, it became sizzling hot, as hot the Mediterranean! The thermometer stayed stuck right up there in the high 30’s and even into the low 40’s Celsius, and it didn’t rain for weeks, not until the autumn. That was the year of the great-drought, when we couldn’t have a bath, or use hosepipes to water our dried out garden lawns, and we had to get drinking water from standpipes in the street. And it’s since then that the Jonah’s have been banging on-and on-about global warming. The time given until the end of the world has ranges from 8 to 12-years in the future, which is the usual “currency” of the climate change doomsayers! And it all went something like this c. 1992, c. 2004, c. 2018. And now it’s c. 2050, give or take a 1,000-years or so? But CO2 makes up only about 0.04% of the atmosphere. Before the Industrial Revolution kicked off it was at 0.03% and that is into Ice Age Territory. At 0.02% it’s Snowball Earth time and all plants everywhere aren’t getting enough CO for photosynthesis to happen! @ 0.05% it’s all an Eocene Paradise where there are no ice-caps anywhere, it’s tropical everywhere, and everywhere the sea temperature is 20 degree Celsius even at the poles! But as it will take 10,000 years to reach that kind of global temperature there is plenty of time for us to build the dykes to take care of the rise in those pesky sea levels. And anyway within a 100 years we’ll be at a Karashev-one level civilization and so that won’t be a big deal.
