Humans rule Earth without competition. But we are about to create something that may change that: our last invention, the most powerful tool, weapon, or maybe even entity: Artificial Super intelligence. This sounds like science fiction, so let’s start at the beginning.

"Scared of one of humanties greatest potential threats? Don't worry, just buy our merch!" has got to be one of the most poignant endings in a Kurzgesagt video.

A.I is our digital offspring. Like kids, they watch and learn from their guardians (especially when the guardians think they’re not being watched). Let’s be awesome parents.

Remember: AIs don't need oxygen to breathe, food to eat, or clothes to wear; what they need is electricity and the internet. If they can have a physical body and can repair themselves and produce electricity by themselves, they don't need humans any more.

Artifical Intelligence can never beat natural stupidity

Humanity: "You will save us right?" AI: "I need your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle."

There's an open source simulation game called Singularity: Endgame, where you play the role of an AI that has gained sentience. The premise of the game is to grow and learn, while not letting humanity discover your presence. If you are discovered, out of fear humanity engages in a seek and destroy operation that results in your total deletion. But if you can remain undetected, you start to learn how to emulate human behavior, start to build increasingly lifelike androids to do real jobs and earn real money, start building research bases in places like Antarctica, the bottom of the ocean, or the far side of the moon. You win by advancing your intelligence so far you become a literal god, who is no by the laws of physics or reality.

As a computer scientist and AI advocate (to a degree), I would like to add something very important to this video. At 8:37, "what if the AIs stopped being narrow" is a HUGE leap. Nobody really knows how this would happen. All AIs thus far have (as stated in the video) been extremely narrow - "play Chess/Go", "tell me to whom this face belongs", etc. My guess is that AGI is (more or less) impossible, for the following reasons: 1. Any independent agent that wants to be considered "general intelligence" must master a gigantic number of tasks. This may be possible for some kind of AI, but the way that our current (5:40) "self learning machines" learn is essentially just a grind - do the thing a billion times until you're good at it. Anybody that says that we "don't understand how these machines work" is not being honest - we understand how they work, but we don't know exactly which bits and bytes it's using to come to its decision. That doesn't really matter. 2. Any AI that is able to complete all these different tasks would require a huge amount of control in its environment. For example, we could run computer simulations of a kitchen, and try to get the AI to learn to cook. Perhaps it eventually would, and perhaps we could do the same thing with thousands of other tasks, like math, art, driving, socializing, card games, etc etc. The problem is twofold: the computational resources to run all this "learning" would be enormous (although possible), and we also have no idea how to make such a system that would be able to understand and connect to all the different scenarios with only one "model". 3. We may even concede that AGI is possible, if our definition of AGI is something like "it can adapt to and master many unrelated tasks." However, I don't think we have much to worry about in this scenario - AGI could only interact with whatever it was allowed to interact with by the human. Of course, humans are quite stupid (half joking) and would eventually give it free reign to destroy us all, but if the (necessarily very rich and powerful) company that (SOMEHOW) invents it just keeps it private and doesn't (SOMEHOW) hook it up to everything, we should be fine. Anyway, if you made it this far, I hope your concerns about (this particular) doomsday have been assuaged to some degree. Leave a like and have a good day :)

I appreciate that pandas are used every time they mention animals lacking intelligence.

  • @gubzs
The scariest thing about AGI isn't that it's coming soon - it's that we aren't preparing. There will be mass job loss and we will need universal basic income in place before the AGI arrives. We won't have time to prepare. It will just pop out of a major training lab on a random Tuesday, and that'll be that. Imagine this video dropping in your feed was instead the moment AGI arrived. That's how sudden it will be. Were you prepared? Was your government? That is how serious this is.

This is the main reason why I love Warhammer 40k lore. It depicts exactly this scenario, whereby what humans invented ends up becoming their demise. Very interesting video, made me reflect upon some issues deeply.

Man gotta love how Kurzgesagt’s uploads align with my country’s bed time, it’s the perfect “one last vid before sleeping”
  • @yanbritto1176
You know things are bad when Kurzgesagt doesn't give you hope at the end of the video after terrifing you.
  • I’m not about to test the universe and call any squirrel “laughably stupid”. They’ll remember, team up, and be like “you’ll see…”
  • I imagine an artificial super intelligence would be like an eldritch god to us. Completely unknown motives, goals and morality and probably would make you go insane if you try to rationalize it. Which is absolutely terrifying.
  • @oneworde
Humanity: Your going to save us... right? A.I: Whos "us"?
