Most people perceive frogs as cold, wet, slimy, ugly creatures that give us warts on the slightest contact. The closer we look at frogs lives the more remarkable and bizarre they reveal themselves to be. There are nearly 4000 known types of frogs and toads in the world. They live in nearly every type of habitat, from open grassy plains to high mountains, and from deserts to tropical rainforests. The variety of their shape and colour is remarkable, so too is the repertoire of noises they make, but their range of reproductive strategies is simply staggering. They have evolved to lay their eggs in water, in trees, underground, on the ground, in private pools, in foam nests, wrapped in leaves and even to carry them around on their back or in special pouches. This film uncovers the secrets of their breeding strategies, defensive behaviour, relationships with man and the causes of their dramatic decline.

This film was first broadcast: 12 Nov 2004

I love frogs so so much. My grandmother passed recently, when I was little my grandma used to get me these little frog figurines and I kept them in a glass case in my bedroom. Whenever I see a frog I think of her 😊
