If you want to use this rig for animations make sure you go to the shader and set frames to 1, disable Cyclic, and enable Auto Refresh. This way the face doesn't change every frame and it only changes when you set keyframes on the location of the bone in pose mode.

Blender is much more unexplored than I thought 🤯
  • @GavinKrause
Amazing! You're a legend for giving away the whole rig, have been so frustrated trying to learn 3D facial rigging and this 2D answer is fascinating, excited to play around!

Few problems I ran into, and how I fixed them: 1. When I uploaded my files, it created more than one plane. Make sure all your files have the same name and are in numeric order. Also, I'm not sure why, but if I selected files that were the same dimensions, all the files in the folder would be in the plane, even if I did not select them. 2. The bone was not changing the offset value of the face. I had to change the up/down value of the bone to something other than 0, then it worked perfectly. Hope this helps!
  • Hey so i noticed you have a red border on the thumbnail. When you watch a video, a red line is on the bottom of the thumbnail. Someone might scroll by thinking theyve already watched your video.

I used your previous 2D video to rig a lot of things, this update really helps, thanks!!

For those having trouble with the shrink-wrap stage, make sure to go into Edit Mode for your face plane and subdivide it a bunch. This should give it geometry to actually wrap to
  • @moltenbolt
This is a wonderful tutorial! It simplifies a complex process into easy steps to follow. Thank you very much Shotty!
  • @EricFaries
This is exactly something i've been wanting a tutorial on for so long XD Now i wanna see someone take this and work it into a rig that can be used with VRChat!!
  • @darrennew8211
That's a great way of doing it. I've seen other ways, but none that give this ease of animating.
  • Once again! Thank you very much for this tutorial! You have made it really clear and easy to understand.
  • One thing you forgot to mention is to put number 1 on the frames box node, because in other wise the sequence repeats all the time when we play,.:face-blue-smiling::face-blue-smiling::hand-pink-waving:

Thanks for the tutorial and files to play with and explore. Just last night I put on Nick Jr for my 2 year old niece, and saw some very similar face animations on 3D characters. I was wondering how to do such a thing, then this shows up in my recommendations. Cheers. Happy to subscribe to your awesome channel.

W video. it explained so many questions other tutorials have left unexplained. i Love your teaching style. thank you so much!
  • If you don't want to use a rig, you can make a custom property for the face object set to integer and use that as a driver for the node value. Though perhaps the object data also has a place to change the frame value for that matter?
  • @Heddrick
Awesome! I remember asking around to see if anyone knew how to set up a Cory Carson face. This is beautiful!
  • @silverbell1485
I'm a complete newbie to Blender here and just wanted to thank you for your tutorial. It's really helpful all the time.
  • @movepigeon
In case anyone was stumped for a bit like I was, after importing the images, if you have a purple square just move forward a frame on your timeline and it should then be your first set of eyes!
