Fun fact: the last non-cardinal to become pope only did so because 2 groups of cardinals refused to elect a pope for about 3 years, so he told them to stop messing around and choose someone, and he was chosen. He made 2 decrees: 1, that popes could retire, and 2, that he was retiring as pope
