Bologna has one of the most beautiful and best-preserved old towns in Europe with many cultural sights. These include the towers from the Middle Ages and the almost 40 km of arcades that connect the extensive city center with its pedestrian zones, squares, churches and palaces. The arcades of Bologna were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2021. Bologna is the capital of the Emilia Romagna region and was European Capital of Culture in 2000.

Piazza Maggiore
The central square in the center of Bologna is dominated by the Basilica of San Petronio, the Palazzo Comunale (13th-15th centuries) and the Palazzo del Podestà, (1485). The Fountain of Neptune Fontana di Nettuno is an early Renaissance work by Giambologna.

Arcades of Bologna
Another special feature of Bologna are the arcades, which form almost 40 km of pedestrian passages. In the Middle Ages there was a law that prescribed this type of construction in order to create living space for the expanding city.
The most famous arcade is the Portico di San Luca. It leads over 4 kilometers up to the pilgrimage church of San Luca. The Arcades of San Luca is considered to be the longest arcade in the world.

Towers of Bologna - Torri Gentilizie
The towers are characteristic sights in Bologna. The family towers were built by wealthy families in the Middle Ages, some of which were used as residential towers. 193 such towers were described in the city chronicles. Among the medieval towers, the leaning towers Torri Gentilizie of Bologna are a symbol of the city.

Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna
The main church of Bologna is the Basilica of San Petronio and it dominates the Piazza Maggiore. With its gigantic dimensions of 132 m long, 60 m wide and 45 m high, it is the fifth largest church in the world.
Like most buildings in Bologna, the Basilica of San Petronio was built of brick. The lower part of the facade was then decorated with marble, while the upper part has remained unfinished to this day.
