Dr. Robotnik's golden idea of tricking Sonic into eating those enticingly delicious gold-plated lead rings thus resulting in Sonic slowly dying from contracting lead poison ran rings around all of the other contraptions he created with the purpose of defeating Sonic.

Fun fact, the space pirates tried to reverse engineer the morph ball, and all the test subjects died horribly, so it is a realistic outcome for everyone besides samus and the chozo.
