Published 2021-02-05
First 10 moves were arranged from famous Firouzja vs Karthikeyan game played in 2019. Queen sacrifice in move 9, it was a really good one but can we say it was an Engine Queen Sacrifice? Probably not as it was forced by the tournament organizers. Leela Chess Zero, artificial intelligence 2021 which started to learn chess 3 years ago from scratch, just by playing against itself. Very interesting choice, like you said based on the game Alireza against Karthikeyan....remember that one as I did a video on that game. That game made quite a splash at the time it was played.

    Great analysis, thanks fod sharing
  • Thanks for explaining this game. Very dynamic and full of tactics. This game should be called chess minefield with number of potential tactics.

This line seems like a lot of fun to play as black. Reminds me of David Bronstein. White is constantly having to fend of the vicious bishop and knight pair. As stockfish shows if played correctly black creates enough threats with its minor pieces to make a draw. Probably no human gm would risk going into this line as white anymore. Also I think Karthikeyan sacrificed the queen on intuition iirc from an interivew he gave after the game.
  • The problem with an engine versus engine game now is that we've been spoiled by the tournament at Wijk an See. So many brilliant games. And so much human interest. For a whole fortnight, day after day. I think we would all agree this is a most exciting time for chess at the highest level. Seems like any one of a dozen players can win a major tournament. Is the hegemony of the great Norwegian over?

That's an awesome opening, interesting if grandmasters are prepared, just in case... looks very risky for black, as they didn't develop yet
  • I remember Firouzja losing in style with this as white! 2 pieces for the Queen, white may be winning in material, but very difficult moves to make.
  • I was flabbergasted to think that an engine would sacrifice its queen like that! Amazing! Oops. Aha. It didn't. It was a set up. An interesting one.
