Lights Out is an animation short following Unmei and her fear of the dark - something which manifests otherworldly beings to strike havoc in the safety of her home.

This is my thesis film for my senior year at Parsons School of Design! Special thanks to my professors and friends who supported me through this :) This is my first ever animated short so I hope you enjoy!

Love how the camera angle is just slightly tilted-enough to feel like something’s wrong but not enough to be jarring

the sound design and the suble character acting is so fucking delicious,,the tension building up to the spirit/creature and the hair on the fan at the end??! ooghhhh
  • The sounds and atmosphere is perfect! I love all the close-up shots. They really give you paranoia like there's something terrifying just outside of your limited view.

That sound design perfectly compliments it…it’s mismatched but congruent. Like it was made to match the visuals, but slightly offset. Because on one hand, when the lights are on, the ominous droning goes quiet. So we think things are fine. But then the lights start buzzing, and that sounds odd, so the darkness and silence is a relief. It keeps switching, so we never feel safe.

First of all, that was incredible. I got actual chills when the whooshy hahhh came. I'd probably get traumatized if something like that happened to me as a kid. Even if it were just my imagination. Second of all, the extra details were great. That little tidbit of animation at the end was smooth. It was so fluid and cool to watch. Not to mention, there were also faded dust particles floating around at the very beginning. You also added highlights on the edges of objects and the characters. Third of all, it's incredible how only one person animated this entire thing. I can't imagine the effort it took you to draw and color these. You did an awesome job. That kind of work definitely deserves some high grades. And finally, congratulations on finishing your thesis film ! ! ! I look forward to more animations from you. Hope your future is great and successful!

Insanely good. Rarely someone knows what true horror looks like.

Everything turned out so well! Even though I’m not looking at it through the big screens anymore, it’s still just as chilling watching it through my phone thanks to the audio coming though my headphones 🥲.
