Fruits of the Spirit, Works of the Flesh - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

2024-05-18に共有
Friends, we come to the Feast of Pentecost, the great celebration of the Holy Spirit. I want to focus on our second reading from the fifth chapter of St. Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, which I’ve used for years in spiritual direction. What you find there are what Paul calls “the fruit of the Spirit,” which he contrasts with “the works of the flesh.” Maybe you’re struggling and wondering, “What should I do? What path do I take?” Whatever is giving rise to the fruits of the Spirit in you is the path you want—and whatever is giving rise to the works of the flesh, stay away from.

Mass Readings:
Reading 1 - Gn 11:1-9
Psalm - 104:1-2, 24, 35, 27-28, 29, 30
Reading 2 - Rom 8:22-27
Gospel - Jn 7:37-39

I had the privilege of attending the confirmation of my son yesterday. Our local Archbishop here in Johannesburg echoed these words of Bishop Baron. Praying that Catholics everywhere take these words to heart, so we can manifest Christ's spirit to our communities.

    * Love is not a feeling. Love is willing for the good of the other.
  • What a privilege we have in Jesus to choir worship to the Holy Spirit on Pentecostal Sunday and everyday ✝️🙏🏽
  • Love is willing good for the other and that is sign of the Holy spirit in us
  • Thank you Bishop Barron for another wonderful homily. I look forward to hearing you every Sunday morning before I go to Mass. God bless you and the work that you do to shepherd your people. We appreciate you!

Yes and Amen!!! Life with the Holy Spirit is beautiful, especially with our challenging circumstances. Thank you, Bishop! ❤🌼
  • Selfishness. Everything the Bishop described here has its roots in that most basic flaw within our nature. I struggle with being patient. A while back I made a decision to consider times when I became impatient as opportunities from the Holy Spirit to practice patience not an opportunity to get upset. I still struggle, but not as much, not so long as I remember that.
  • I am spiritually enriched once again. Thank you, Lord Jesus for having me here. May God bless you more, Bp. Barron.

In this age of personality, not character...we need the Spirit. Thank you BRB for these words.

There are some wondrous points here, especially the idea of the love that the Father and Son experience toward each other that results in the Holy Spirit, Who enters us and makes it possible for us to bear the fruits listed in Galatians 5. And we bear this fruit as we seek to will the good of the other, Bishop Barron's oft-repeated point. Though as sinners we're caught in wrongful ways, the Holy Spirit gives us the opportunity to leave it and live a fruitful life that reveals God's character.
  • Thank you Bishop Barron, may the Holy Spirit be with us at all times. God bless you amen.

  • In this day and age, we have to be careful not to confuse Love with 'tolerance'. Many people today would say that if you are intolerant of someone's beliefs, then you are 'biggoted', 'hateful', 'spreading hate', etc. However, you can truly love a person, as the good Bishop says here, 'will the good of another' without agreeing with their views. In fact disagreeing with some views that are out there today, may be the loving thing to do.... Thank you again, good Bishop! Your weekly insights are True food for the soul! ❤
  • Thank you joyful message Bishop Barron. When I was younger; I totally had jealousy, anger, strife & impurity. I still struggle w/ lack of self control. But! I am witness to God’s spirit taking away my desire for opiates and other mind bending substances: the desire is not there! It is a daily struggle with stupid stuff such as scrolling and seeing what others say on line about (whatever.) I’ll never be free of tendency to sin, but at least I know Christs’ love for me; I have believing friends, and am in contact with good priests and sisters. God is real! But we have to daily affirm our belief! Bishop Barron is a light on a hill.❤️‍🔥

The Love that connects the Father and the Son - just that line is rich in teaching.
