Liverpool to Chester - but by Merseyrail or TfW?

Published 2023-10-27
Let's try both services that run from Liverpool Lime Street down to Chester. I've got some time on my hands before my train home to Devon from Chester and I also have on day left on my North West Ranger ticket. They take just the same amount of time to complete the journey, so which one would you choose?

As someone who grew up in Helsby as a kid and who visited Chester a fair bit, I really enjoyed watching this 😎👍🏻 Great job Johnny! Would be interesting to see if Merseyrail do indeed get the battery powered Class 777s on the Helsby to Ellesmere Port ghost line and create a North West loop line round to Warrington

Lovely video, you will find if you use a circular polarising filter on your lens you can avoid unwanted reflections from windows.

Another great video 🤠 Been to Liverpool quite a few times and love the station! I have a soft spot for the 153s - I did my work experience with Porterbrook (who owns the 153s) so got to go in quite a few stored WMR and Northern ones! I also have fond memories of them from my many holidays in South Wales and Cardiff, lucky they're staying with them even after the South Wales metro finishes!

We've yet to do the Liverpool to Chester via Runcorn route. I usually use Merseyrail, but then being a Merseyside resident I do get free bus and rail travel on my disabled pass. My other half accompanies me using the £6.00 Saveaway ticket. In the distant future when she eventually hits 60, she will get a Merseytravel senior pass.

Another fab report, thank you, most enjoyable as always. Glad to see you were adequately fed and watered on the trip. Just had a quick read of the comments and you certainly have some very knowledgeable rail fans popping up here :)

Another enjoyable and informative video. With so many train channels out there yours is one of the best commentaries and excellent editing. Cannot understand why you don’t have more followers. Thanks for all your good work.

The Liverpool station is beautiful, especially the exterior; spectacular. A definite "wow". Another top-notch video, Mr Hoover. We haven't been to Chester...yet. It's on the ever growing "to do" list along with "must start to buy lottery tickets".

I have never been through the Mersey Rail Tunnel. But it is on my list now.
  • The Daniel Adamson ('the Danny') art-deco steam tug is the vessel moored alongside the Sutton swing bridge. It has been fully restored after rotting for many years at Ellesmere Port boat museum and now does leisurely cruises along the River Weaver and/or the Manchester Ship Canal. A lovely way to spend a summer's day.
  • Great video Johnny! I didn't realise they still used 153s on this route, it's been 197s since I did it a couple of times last year

I used to live in Chester around 15 years ago so going to Liverpool with Merseyrail was one of our Saturday favourites. That time the ticket cost only 4 £ return so it was a no brainer. Only down side was that the last train back was fairly early (around 10).

Thank ypu for sharing the video. I am amazed how TFW Super Sprinters still on Liverpool to Chester services! Most of times is a 158 and not sure if 197s though.

A journey i would like to do. A good video! It shows you don't have to go somewhere exotic to find interesting subject matter. Mind! Some might find Liverpool a tad exotic!
