In the 1980s, Dhirubhai Ambani had become the richest man in India. He had two sons - Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani. Dhirubhai thought that his sons were quite close. So he never wrote a will to divide his multi-billion dollar empire.
Finally, Dhirubhai suffered a second stroke unexpectedly in 2002 and passed away, leaving behind India’s largest company without a clear division.
For the next 3 years, the two brothers tried to run the $15 billion dollar empire together but failed. In 2005, their mother Kokilaben intervened and finally mediated a settlement between the two.
It is 2024 now, and more than 20 years later, it looks like history is on the verge of repeating itself. The story sounds similar - an Ambani - the richest man in India - is aging and on the verge of retirement, while his heirs are in line to inherit the largest company in India.
So how will Mukesh Ambani manage a fair division? Who is going to get what in India’s biggest succession of all time?
